Replacement seatbelts

Postby rival » Tue 20.03.2007, 23:25

Another question (blame the stand at Donington for reminding what a useful resource this is!).

My seatbelts don't retract that reliably and I want to replace fully rather than take any risks. Prices at a couple of Lotus dealers are around £150 a pair. The last seatbelts I bought and fitted (about five years ago) for my old Spitfire were £50 a pair, so I was wondering (yet again ) whether anyone had any money saving tips.

Some of the other threads mention that the female end is the same as some Nissan set, but I couldn't find anything about whether there was a standard GM set that would fit the Elan SE.

Any ideas?

Thanks Dave.

So £140 for the pair at Donington was good value after all. Damn.

I assume fitting is straight forward enough. I couldn't find a guide on this site.

Replacement seatbelts

Postby Ghost » Mon 09.04.2007, 16:07

I have just replaced my seatbelts, as the old ones did not retract without a lot of help and I was worried that they would not pass the MOT.
I sent my original seatbelts to F.D.T.S. Ltd (www.fdts-seatbelts.co.uk) after a phone call to Sue Taylor (01932-342043) to explain what was needed.
She supplied two new Autoliv retractors with webbing and fitted the original buckle and loop, which is fixed to the B post.
The belts were returned the same day they arrived at F.D.T.S. and the cost was £45 per belt + P&P + VAT.
The service and help from Sue Taylor could not be be beaten, and I would recomend them to everyone!

Did all that work and not dun mine yet...and I must.. :(

I'm trying to find a spare set.. to try and get a rolling exchange going

Any chance of a write up on how easy they were to change on the car

Also is there an Autoliv part No on the retactor...

The reason is:-

I know the Springs are made in the UK... shipped to Australia...fitted to retractors.... then shipped here... but Autoliv are keeping stum...I don't think they know it's used on our car... So I'm trying to find the number for the spring eventually..

Replacement seatbelts

Postby Ghost » Mon 09.04.2007, 16:59

The replacement of the seatbelts is very easy, which is unusual for Lotus!!!
After removing the trim from the 'B' post, a 17mm socket is needed to remove the 4 bolts that hold the seatbelt.
In my case the most difficult job was removing the trim, as my car had been retrimmed with excessive use of black gunky sealant which stuck to everything!!
It took about one hour to remove the original belts, and roughly the same time to install the new belts and refit the trim.
The Autoliv retractors are preloaded with webbing, and F.D.T.S. remove the belt loop that fixes to the 'B' post and fits it onto the new belt before fitting the buckle.
That is the reason I sent my old belts to F.D.T.S., but I suppose you could just send the belt loop and buckle from your old belts.

I cannot remember seeing an Autoliv part number on the replacement seatbelts, and as they are installed, I don't want to remove the trim again because of the 'gunky black sealant'

One advantage F.D.T.S. has, is that Autoliv/Safelex are based nearby, so the units are readily available to them.

It really is an easy job to change the belts, and the difference is very noticable.

Seat Belts

Postby Steve A » Thu 10.01.2008, 19:22

:D I've just received my new belts back from F.D.T.S,what an excellent service considering that I only posted them last thing Monday.
I know it might seem to most people to be a boring thing to put right but it should be the first thing on the renovation list :!:

guys just been reading the manual and it says you need to remove the sill plate to get the B post cover off ?? is this correct as I need to replace my belts and don't want to remove anything unnecessary :-)
