Bob, I had thought the same thoughts before we all commit...... I desperately need to do something with my rears, so I don't mind being the guinea pig and doing a trial fitting.

Anodised Sliding Pins

Postby algirdas » Tue 03.06.2008, 16:57

Dear All:

I picked mine up yesterday and, though they are not Dorman parts, the sliders appear to be unanodised aluminum.

I suspect that all of the aftermarket manufacturers of these parts have switched to aluminum on the advice of their lawyers.

Geoff-Do you need me to blast a set over to you? You'll probably pay more for the shipping than for the parts.

Sincerely,

Algirdas

I did pay the little extra to get the test ones shipped faster
I would think they are likley to take around 10days to appear

The group buy is likley to be about the same after that so I am hoping to get this all done and dusted by the end of the month (June)

But it is nice to see that others have followed suit and have changed the material all be it with out the anodised finish.

If worse comes to the worse I can get them hard anodised for around £3.50 a set or you can even do it yourself

Algirdas, don't worry as I'm being Bob's guinea pig and hope to get them fitted as soon as I get them.

Bob, is there any chance of you getting mine hard anodised for me before sending them on?

The ones that Algirdas got were not Dorman so I am hoping as the ones I have ordered are Dorman they will come as per the Dorman Calipers anodised

If it happens they are not anodised I will see what I can do

bu double g rrrrrrrrr

The parts arrived this morning and although they are a Dorman part and do fit the calipers the pins are NOT ally

The ones that algirdas got were alloy but they look like they are £18.00 a side which makes them rather mor expensive than the Dorman option
http://www.napaonline.com/masterpages/N ... Kit+-+Rear
It was fortunate that I ordered just the one as you lot would have been more disapointed than you probably are.

Will re investigate getting them machined.

I have take the view that I can either use a friends lathe (builds race cars at home) or I can purchase one my self
The latter may be a the way to go as I have the hub conversion to do and the prices I had for that have been higher than I would have expected

Material cost for the pins is small and the cost is really how long it takes to machine (not long once set up)
Will try to get 8 machined up asap care of a friend of mine and anodised as I know Geoffsmith is after a set urgently

As a note the the seals in the kits seem to be correct even if the pins are not

Never mind Bob, it seemed like a damned good plan at the time. As you say, at least we're not sitting on a pile of pins that nobody wants. Just make sure you don't loose out financially - spread the cost about.

I'm still interested in getting a set trialled, so as soon as you're ready, let me know.

Anodised Sliding Pins

Dear Geoff:

If your car is dead in the water, just say the word and a set of pins will be winging their way out to you.

Algirdas,

As ever, thanks for the kind offer. It is not critical yet, but the rears are taking progressively longer to stop rubbing. If the worst comes to the worst, I could always whip the pins out my Dormans but I'm hopeful that Bob can sort something out and I'm keen to try them out for him.

Update

As the Dorman pin kit does not include the aluminium pins as per the Dorman rear caliper and a number of you wanted to buy these but it was provisional on them being aluminium

I am about to machine at least one set of these but I need some feed back as to others who may be interested as I need to order in the material
It takes 240mm of aluminum bar for a set of 4

This is what I propose

A set of rear caliper repair kits that include a piston and sliding boot repair kits along with a set of alloy pins as per the Dorman calipers
boots and kits ordered in from the states
Cost is going to be £43.00 + postage in the UK

So you get
4 hard anodised aluminium pins
8 boots for above
2 pad clips
2 caliper repair kits (piston seal + boot + "O" ring etc)

The bolts are nothing special other than they are 10.9 tensile strength and could include these at cost

Or just the pins £20.00 + postage

Any comments
New list?

I will try to get a price on Monday for the bolts for these and will try to get the flanged bolts that are supplied with the Dorman kits noting that they need to be a minimum of 10.9 tensile bolts

I have a small friendly faster supply company just up the road from me and they are very helpfull
