It's either this or a hard top, so it may come down to $$$$$$, or more likely, whether Angie notices that she is getting wet in the rain, before i fit the turbo! Like Dico, I would also be keen on joining a group buy for the turbo, but out of interest, was this model ever 'standard fitment' on anything in the UK - after all, the wrecker/recovery yards are full of newer stuff these days?

Just the one now, but this one's mine! - and it will be finished eventually..... - but also temporary custodian of a project until it is finished enough for Angie to drive it

gents,
I do have a small favor to ask. For those that are truely interested, I need three bits of info: #1 or#2, 2.25or3" inlet and colour of connectors. The last two points are obviously with regards to #2. I'll be working up pricing in the next few days for the two kits.

No favour too small! I've taken the liberty of updating the current list where I can (obviously mine and where a preference has already been expressed), please add to it (or correct what I've written if wrong for you) as Marie requests to complete the missing info.

I'm a little unclear on the pros and cons of 2.25" versus 3" inlets? It seems obvious that bigger will impose less of a flow restriction than smaller. But what is best for fitting to a standard trash can (cold air feed and not proven to be a major obstacle in standard form, The trash can outlet is a little over 2.25" at 62mm) or is it better to fit something different (as Marie has done). What is the size of the compressor inlet on the T2560? For the moment I'm going with the bigger is better option, but would still quite like to hook this up to the standard trash can to maintain stock appearance and cold air feed, or is that just pointless?

Just looked at the Garrett website to answer my own question. The inlet hole for the compressor on the T2560 has a diameter of 53mm which is 2.125". on that basis and from my long out of practice hydraulic and flow theory there would seem to be little benefit in a 3" inlet (I'm perfectly happy to be proved wrong). I therefore think that a 2.25" inlet connector is wholly satisfactory and would easily connect to the standard trash can.

I've very recently finally fitted my C/F intake pipes along with bespoke connectors and would like to re-use these if at all possible. So on the basis of all above I've just amended my requirement accordingly.

1. Ailwyn #2 everything inc turbo, 3", black connectors
2. Ailwyn #2 no turbo (I may change my mind based on group buy cost), 3", black connectors
3. Monty
4. MattDon (everything) 2.25", red connectors
5. Nige - #2 (everything), 2.25" inlet, Red Connectors. But dont believe I actually need the trash can to turbo inlet pipe or the connectors at either end of it. I will however go for the whole kit if that keeps things simple.

for our US family

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/GARRETT- ... 0228392471

there are 2 turbos here at $775....seems to be the cheapest Ive found...however the $150 shipping costs make it more expensive than sourcing one in the UK.......

heya gents,
just to clarify. I'm not doing the can to turbo pipe. I am doing the turbo to intercooler pipe in these kits. As an FYI the inlet to the "can" is 2.25. Come to think of it, for those of you that ordered the intake pipe on the LGM BOV thread, I will do a limited run of the correct size can to turbo. That info needs to be updated on the other thread to keep me straight. Just add a "turbo" to your order on the other thread.

The 3" inlet is for custom intakes such as the ones on Ekapol and my car. Only plus is more availability of air. Volume vs. velocity of a given amount of air. Other than that no advantage

The aftermarket turbo packages for Mazda MX5s (http://www.flyinmiata.com) say:
The standard turbocharger is the GT2560R. This is our favorite all-around turbo, providing good power potential with good spoolup. A smaller GT2554R is also available for those who make response their highest priority.

For comparison, the factory-stock Mazdaspeed MX-5 has a 1.8L engine making 178 hp and 166 lb-ft of torque with a non-ball-bearing IHI turbocharger ECU capped at 8psi. For this (already turbocharged car) Flying-Miata offers turbo upgrades thusly:
There's a selection of [replacement] turbos. For better response than stock with a similar maximum horsepower level, we have the small GT2554R. For similar response to the stock turbo yet with the potential for approximately 60 hp more power, we have the GT2560R. For maximum power (and built engines), there's the big GT3071R.

Also note how their turbine-outlet has evolved over the years, from right to left. Image

Got that Marie thanks. As the inlet trumpet to the turbo is a part that can be changed anyway I don't see a major problem if anyone wanted to go to a custom intake at some later stage. My adaptor plate arrived today :D .
