MSD coils on way!

Postby stevieg8571 » Sat 26.11.2005, 04:02

Hi,
Just an update on what's happening.
My friend in the states agreed to get me a pair of the MSD coils posted to her place then forward them on to me. I asked her how she wanted me to pay her and she said 'let's call it even as we probably owe you the same for when we came over to England"! It would appear showing yanks some history (Lancaster castle/ Lake District and even Blackpool) really pays off sometimes!!
Was gonna ask her to send a replacement K&N but thought that a tad cheeky!!
I'm just waiting for them to arrive so can drive it again, although in this weather I'm not in that much of a rush!

I've sourced a new set of ignition leads (after being knocked-back by 90% of shops) for £26.50 and should be sorting them this afternoon.

I've removed the header tank to get access and am trying to clean what appears to be 14yrs of sludge from inside it. Any ideas how to do this. Tried soaking in boiling/soapy water but it's not budging.

MSD coils arrived and fitted

Postby stevieg8571 » Tue 20.12.2005, 19:51

Hi,
Just to let you all know that the 2 coils arrived today at 4pm and that the car was running again by 6pm.
The hardest part of it was messing about with the expansion tank and ensuring that the new leads weren't cross-connected (although the coils being labelled made that nearly imposible!)
Thanks for all the advice, hopefully I'll be able to help somebody else out soon and maybe even buy some of you a pint!!

Steve.

gladd to hear it is fixed.

I assume it was a simple swap into the OE spot -- do you have the MSD part number you used x 2 ??

MSD No's

Postby stevieg8571 » Thu 22.12.2005, 10:35

Hi Doug.
All I had to do was remove the old coils ( 2 x 5.5mm bolts), clean up the contact area and also replace the small orange rubber gromets that MSD supply to seal the electrode area, then simply slot the electrodes into the new coils, bolt them back into position and re-connect the leads. It's as easy as that.
The packet for new coil states; COIL, GM COIL PACK, 2 TOWER. PART No. 8224.
That's just one coil so you'd obviously need to order 2. Think they were $43 each.
It actually took longer to drain/remove the header tank. I removed the large bore air pipe to make things easier too (and wiped the throttle area/flap clean too as I know this improves the idle on my astra).

Hope this helps Doug.

Happy christmas, Steve.

I need to get a new coil, and I've read through this entire thread. Can some-one just summarise for me if anyone has bought any of these coils, if so from where (several sites seem to be mentioned), and how much where they ?

Part no etc. would be good too !

Glad you guys mentioned this. I hadn't even thought to remove the 2 coils from my car but will now do so!

Are there any other hard to obtain or especially expensive replacement items I should also consider? Please help me out if you know of any. I also wish I could remove my Optima battery as I have it on a "smart" charger & it is fine, but I can't open the bloody passenger (RH) door to release the hood cover!

...so I just unbolted the latch "catches" on the hard tonneu. Problem solved! The Optima battery, and even more importantly the "remote" charging cables whose electric-plug matched my long-term-storage-charger, have been recovered.

Tha car now has the world's ultimate dead-battery! All the better to go to the salvage-yard with.

Parts were ordered 2am UK time on a Tuesday and arrived at my US office 11am East Coast time on the Wed. I even got them back through the airport security scanners and the car is now running again :D . Cost for the pair of coils was $100/£58 including delivery within US (split with ChrisP who also ordered a set). They could also have shipped to UK.

I just tried ordering two new coils from Jegs. The parts came to 2x$46 = $92 which seemed great until they added on $90 for shipping and another $12 for handling bringing the total cost to just under $200. What did I do different?

Hi, I'm just about to fit 2 coils. Being a beginner at this stuff I thought I'd take a look at what I need to do. I loosened and shifted the expansion tank and peered down to where the coils are with a torch. It looks like a very tight space to work in with spanners or socket wrenches-- also the bolts seem to be inset into a recess in the coil housings. I'm probably an idiot, but at the risk of revealing how clueless I am, getting to these bolts looks a bit awkward to me with the tools I have (I dont have huge boxes of gleaming auto tools) :-) . Any hints about how to get to them (which tool to use etc?)

You should be OK with a fairly basic 1/4" drive socket set, using about a 3" extension from the socket to the ratchet. They're 10mm bolts. The main worry is dropping any of them because if you do they just seem to completely disappear. Er, apparently! Watch out for losing the plastic insulating washers too...

that's great thanks! :) So you don't remove the coil plate to get to the coils more easily? Just remove the old ones and bolt the new ones onto the plate?

Ah. I see what you mean. The 10mm bolts are the ones that bolt the coil backplate to the inside of the engine bay.
The ones that bolt the actual coil packs to the backplate are only 5.5mm.
If you've got the right sized socket and a small extension bar you can easily remove each coil pack. It's only 2 bolts for each, so it's probably easier than removing the backplate and then unbolting the coils from it.

thanks

I'll try just replacing the coil packs in situ-- but if that proves too awkward I'll unbolt the backplate to get better access to those little recessed bolts on the packs themselves. Thanks for your patience.

This site ships the coils free in the U.S. (any order over $25 ships free), but they don't ship overseas.

Note that Summit has 3 different coils to do the job.

ACC-140017 Ships Today $38.95
ACCEL Ignition Coil, AC Delco Style Super DIS Coil, Coil Pack, Rectangle, Silicone, Yellow, 45,000 V, Each

MSD-8224 Ships Today $45.60
MSD Blaster Ignition Coil, DIS Performance Replacement, E-Core, Square, Epoxy, Red, 40,000 V, GM, Each

SUM-850017 Ships 8/24/08 $34.95
Summit Performance High Output Ignition Coil, Square, Epoxy, 40,000 V, Red, GM, DIS, Each

I'll be driving right by their McDonough, Georgia location late this month or early next.
UPS & FEDEX shipping has gone up a lot, especially to overseas, since petrol has shot up. Cheap gas is, or was (and yes you I know you pay $8.50) one of the reasons we have lower prices on consumer products inna da USA.
