That car used to be owned by an East Midlander. I believe he bought it direct from a Lotus Employee who had it from new. Good to see it again...
...oh and great colour too

Only going on the pictures I saw on Pistonheads, it looked very tidy indeed.

I can't tell you a great detail (other than I have owned it for 8 years) - it was originally owned by Lotus and has a Norwich registered number plate, but Lotus didn't seem to have much info in their archives about it.
The 001 plaque was fitted by John Major according to the What Car magazine review of the time...though the date of registration and VIN don't tie in with the other S2 sequences (which in the main have the Ltd number as the suffix of the VIN).
If I was a betting man I might suspect that the "original" 001 was a factory demo car or display model and that at some point close to the end of the production run it was refurbished or brought to life??
Or perhaps some accident befell 001 and it was “replaced”??

I'm pretty sure the Ltd edition numbers were not chronological if that helps.
I would have thought the colours would have been sprayed in batches?

Yes, there are a few discrepancies in the numbering - but the registration/VIN place it around 18 months after the other early build cars (including Median Green ones...).
Interestingly I notice #003 has the same inconsistency.
I would love to know more - but it seems Lotus didn't bother to archive any records which related to test or staff cars....

I should know this but I'm useless as an Elanorak.
(I'm pretty good as a collector though)
If the Vin is derived from the chassis number then it would be mixed up with the chassis?
How did you get the date of the other VIN?
I thought the chassis were built years before, for the SE production run. not sure when they would have been stamped with a number though. I have a chassis never registered for the road.
BTW The date of manufacture on DVLA records are often wrong.
