John

I wrote this a few years ago, but everything you want to know is there. Mine lasted 2 years.

Did you do the nearside or offside?
I ask because I replaced the CV boot on my nearside last weekend, only to find that the gearbox/driveshaft oil-seal leaked afterwards.
So I got another one and did the whole job AGAIN ( ) on Saturday, and now the new seal leaks even worse than the old one.

Neil -

I had the same problem when I chucked the new engine in last week!

I got a pair of oil seals from SJ's @ £8.01 each plus next-day delivery.

The N/S one is easier to change than the O/S one, but first thing to check is that the driveshaft is fully pushed home - there is a lip on the shaft which needs to be into the oil seal for it to work - it is easy to fit the driveshaft without pushing it far enough home to engage the holding circlip and have a leaky seal - don't ask how i KNOW this to be true - but at least the new ones don't leak either!
Dave

Just the one now, but this one's mine! - and it will be finished eventually..... - but also temporary custodian of a project until it is finished enough for Angie to drive it

...oh, and a 2006 Freelander destined for the jungles of The Gambia - 4500 miles across roads, desert and tracks - what could possibly go wrong?

Aha, so YOU'RE the bu66er that had the last two!
Oh well, at least it encouraged me to find a new supplier (who sold them for the same price, and their P&P turned out to be a bit cheaper anyway). :P
After a couple of hundred miles yesterday playing Russian Roulette with my mechanicals, it seems to have stopped leaking.
That means either:
a) The driveshaft has now seated itself properly and the seal is doing it's job, or
b) The oil level has dropped so far that there's none left to leak out!

I guess the only way to be sure is to put some more oil in and see what happens...

Neil it is the O/S. I also found that the shaft can be removed from the hub without undoing the bottom ball joint rap a piece of polythene around the splines oil to make it slippy push the splines past the seal then pull out the polythene as it goes in it is the splines that can cut the oil seal hope this helps
