You are only unlucky if you wallow in your own self-pity. If life wasn't handed you on a silver platter then you simply look for the best engineering solution to succeed. Having owned limited-production cars all my life I am usually able to improve upon the production-line solution when my turn comes. Therefore, I wasn't putout at all. If something works the 1st time; that's when I consider myself blessed. The alternative to that is the norm, and the source of engineering innovation.

I cannot count or remember the number of engineering solutions I've made to problems which never should have existed in the 1st-place.

I owe it to Dave and others who might be interested in the strut bar to post a follow-up to my strut bar fit problem. In the end it took me all of about 5-10 minutes with a rat tail file to lenghten the hole to get the bar to fit. The bar is on and though I have yet to do a run up a twisty mountain road (maybe tomorrow, heh heh), I am happy with the installation. Thanks for your effort on this Dave!

I finally got 'round to fitting mine today. Wow. Perfect fit. I sprayed a little WD40 on the nuts just in case, and it took me all of about 10 minutes, with no helper, and just a 17mm socket and a craft knife (for the carpet).

Thanks Dave.

And how are those nuts doin' now? I sometimes sprinkle baby powder on for comfort. Your way never occured to me. Either way, it's not great when they stick to stuff. :offtopic:

The sad thing is I don't think anybody's touched them since 1991!

:smt022

Powder might work, I guess. I always find it more enjoyable working in the garage if I keep my nuts well lubed, though.

I do need to check to make sure they have the right torque applied, though. Gotta be sure there won't be any slippage, or damage with the extra stiffness I now have.

How long do you think it'll be (no pun intended) before LGM comments on our male immaturity?

Creaking

Postby tigerdog » Fri 01.08.2008, 20:30

I get a metallic ticking/creaking sound from Smaug's strut bar. Anyone else hear this? Should I loosen, apply some lithium or moly grease and retighten? Thoughts?

I'd check to be sure the bolts are tight -- a slightly loose bolt could creak a bit.

If I read the manual correctly, proper torque is 36 foot/pounds. Mine were decidedly under-torqued. Thanks for the advice. Tightening eliminated the creak.

Hey gang. (Really) long time and no posts, I know. Life kinda took over and my Elans have had to take a back seat for a while. I did want to let everyone know that I do have some strut bars left (5). I haven't been all through the site and don't know if someone is making a new version - don't want to step on any toes - but won't probably be making others in the near future. They are up for grabs at $40 each + shipping. Looking back that comes to around $50 in the US and $70 to the UK - though in the good ol' days I used to send a group shipment overseas for less.

Let me know if you are interested. I have finally figured out my log in again, so I can get messages!
Rumors of my demise have been greatly exaggerated.

Dear Dave:

I can use one, possibly two if you have any left. Just let me know and I'll get the money sent off to you.

Sincerely,

AML
