Ah.....I have only just seen this post...hold it there, do not paint it, there is no need...It is Zinc plated (drab olive passivated) that's why it is a dark colour.....get some Cream metal polish and rub the hell out of it....it won't seem to be doing anything for a while then it will shine like Chrome!!!!
Autosol is the best one.
In theory it's less resistant to corrosion after the passivation is removed. but I have found it to be fine.
Try getting a little buffing wheel set for a dremil type tool..ten off you go....most Zinc and Nickel plating will polish up like chrome.
That's how these classic car guys do most of there stuff...it's not all re-chromed like we think..its just the original plating polished.

If you release the capsule, you should be able to rotate the wastegate shaft over almost 90°, so there should be fair bit of movement and it should be free and easy unless there's an 8mm spanner jammed in there.

You're trying to rotate the shaft - if you pull the whole of the wastegate capsule plus bracket away from the turbo (towards the front of the car), you should then be able to move it (side to side). Thinking about it and looking at the picture, you might be better of removing the hose to the capsule as well. When I did mine on the car, I wasn't sure how much it had to move and I thought I had freed it pretty well. It was only when I was porting the wastegate (off the car) that I realised how far it could move. It was also pretty sticky in places and took quite a bit of wiggling to free it off completely.

It's moved...just..
It's not free by no means... it's jamming solid in numerous places...
it worries me it was fine one day and biffed the next... is it possible for internal failure of the waste gate...
I'll have one more go...
The car overboosts with a code 31, but the power isn't there..
I like my 0.5 Bar boost...
You boys must scare yourselfs silly with 3 bar boost

Good news...
and bad...
First the good...
the rod nows moves freely...
full range of movement..quick response...0.5 bar boost... normally turbo whistle...
Now the bad...
I had to use a WD40 equivilant..moving it back and forth alone would not release it...my car smells like a BBQ...
I did use a small paint brush with some copper crease to keep things moving thou
Cheers Geoff.. taking the pipe off makes things easier and allows more access behind the shield to lube up...

and admire the oxidation process

Great to hear! Congrats on a job well done. But for any BBQ related items, make mine medium-rare.
