Already considered this and will be done officially at the appropriate time.
(You may recall they were in attendance for parts of the I.O.M trip).

I'm sure Kimbers will be up for some more rip style entertainment

Most of us are now dual members of LEC and LEF anyway, just dont all have both types of car! Lets hope by the time this happens we've all got one of each

A USA friend told me that the original route 66 is badly maintained and bypassed in a lot of places - is this true?

The same friend said there is a excellent road which runs down the west coast which would be worth incorporating - any thoughts?

I did some of the eastern section in 2004 and it is a bit like an old concrete runway in places and yes there are new roads but the essence of the trip will be to follow the old route wherever practical- there are plenty of sites with maps if you want a look.
There are many roads we could take as deviations. I did the west coast from San Diego to Washington and then back through the inland states. About 6K miles in 4 weeks.

Thanks to chris.t and DaveT for mentioning this thread during the weekend. I'm well up for this, I've already checked with work and they've confirmed that I can have a month off if/when required. It sounds like DaveT has something in the pipeline for this, I look forwards to hearing more details!

A couple of the most scenic drives in the U.S. are the Pacific Coast Highway and the Blue Ridge Parkway. Well worth incorporating either if possible.

You can buy maps that detail route 66 but you won't be driving the actual road, just tracing it with the replacement highways.

Very much up for this - shipping cars isn't a huge problem - lots of specialist importers will help - Portsmouth to Cape town is currently £1300 inc vat containerised.

Need to start a special fund that that flies under "managment's" radar.....

Chris- I didn't for one millisecond think standard insurance would cover for this trip. I have already made some enquiries regarding this and two policies need to be obtained. Group buy is never going to be a possibility for car insurance.
1- a marine policy to cover for the shipping- this may be sorted by the shipping agent or may not atcmb.
2- a policy to cover for driving in the US.
For onfo and as a rough guide- shipping in 2008 was quoted at £1500 to Southampton to New York/ return from San Francisco to Felixstowe- this was roll on and off and is regarded as the safer option according to the shipping agent who is a specialist car importer and exporter.
WRT Route 66 and for those of you who havent actually been over there and driven it. Much of the original road still exists, much of the road has been replaced but the purpose of the journey is not so much to stick rigidly to the old route but to drive east to west as close as possible to the route 66 and at the same time take in some other roads of interest, meet up with other Lotus peeps and have a bloody good one off holiday.
