Drive Shaft Boot Kit

Postby L.G. » Tue 23.09.2008, 23:01

Hi all,

I need A100R6005S (inboard) and A100R6004S (outboard) boot kits. SJ's list the inboard one as genuine a lotus part but, they have a sj coded part for the outboard one. I read a thread about some cross references but it wasn't really clear to me. Does anyone know a cross reference for these? Are they universal parts?

Thanks,
L.G.

I think the driveshafts were Elan specific, so wouldn't rely on the isuzu link.

Are they just shorter...

I'd say the C.V. joints would be universal item, but which car...

IMHO I think Isuzu link could be the way forward, a bit of invest required...

I also need to replace these items in the near future...

Thanks for replies, I'll try to find a replacement and if I can't I'll go SJ's route. I'll let you know when I do it.

In Sept 2007, Oliver reported:
Go into your nearest Renault dealer and order part number : 8671002726
It`s a complete gaiter kit (boot, grease, clips), and it fits the Elan outer joint perfectly. I`ve had one fitted for six months now and it`s still perfect. Oh, and they`re only £7.72+vat each.
They also suppy a tool in two parts (8671002728 + 8671002727), that allows you to fit the gaiter without removing the joint. An amazing bit of kit.

Hi L.G.,

I'd suggest this thread here: Driveshaft and CV Joints. The part can be cross-referenced to the Vauxhall Cavalier, and is a Duraboot part DBC100. Alternatively you can call the manufacturer direct and their details are in the thread.

Best of luck.

Driveshaft design (unsurprisingly) revolves around the required torque rating. The torque rating dictates the size of the shaft and the joint. So it is quite likely that there will be another Gaiter that fits.

There are however many variables in the design manufacture of drive shafts. This combined with rigorous testing usually ends up with each component being relatively unique.

Gaiters are mainly tested for endurance – The chances are that if you find one that fits it will do, but may wear out after say 50k miles, whereas the original should last the design life of the vehicle. Not much of an issue to us!

Its only purpose is to keep the grease in and the dirt out so you are probably ok with any of the suggestions

I had the Duraboot DBC100 on my car (both sides) and both sides developed a cut in the boot at the outer diameter of the boot nearest the hub. Since these boots have a larger OD than other boots, I suspect they contact the threaded end of the upper ball joint, eventually causing a cut, and grease leakage(usually onto the brakes  ). I've replaced the Duraboot DBC100 with Dorman 614-001 boots. These are also the stretchy type, and can be installed with the Duraboot cone and lube. They have an outside diameter much closer to the driveshaft diameter near the hub, and have plenty of clearance to the upper ball joint threads. These are available at many auto parts stores in the colonies (including RockAuto.com), not sure about the rest of the world.

Don,

By both sides do you mean inner and outer? My inner boots are the priority, did you use the Dorman alternative for the inners?

Hi, L. G.

No, I replaced the outer boots on both sides of the car - my inner boots are OK right now.

Inner boots were changed today using Ford Escort boots as advised above. They fit perfectly the only trouble I had was the clips for the bigger side of the boots that came in the box didn't fit so different ones were used. Not much of an issue really, thanks for all replies.

Here are a series of photos showing how the stetchy-boot & cone system works:
http://www.saabcentral.com/~munki/techn ... h_type.htm

The instructions on a stretchy-boot package:
http://img109.imageshack.us/img109/5286/p1040115e.jpg
And the installer's personal comments:
"The new gaiter has to be heated in boiling water to render it properly flexible. I found the best way to do this after one aborted attempt: turn the gaiter inside out, place cone lube all over it, then soak it in boiling water for 10 minutes. I also heated up the cone too as the air temperature was only about 10 degrees. Take it from the water quickly and place on the cone. Place the cone over the CV joint (the cone is open/hollow on the big end) and in one motion push the gaiter right up and over the end of the cone onto the axle shaft. It's not that easy, you have to really push hard, but it will go over undamaged with a bit of effort. I found wearing a pair of work gloves helped. When the gaiter is on the shaft turn it the right way out; it's fairly easy, just push the smaller end with your fingers whilst holding the larger end, you might have to get your fingers right inside for the last little bit of the smaller end, I certainly did."

It seems like everyone else here in the USA, I have to do the right outer boot.
So then, does anyone know where in the states a person can obtain a CV-joint boot "cone"?
The whole concept of the stretchy-boot seems to exist primarily in UK.

I discovered just last week that both of my outer boots have given up. I've already got the boots from Rock Auto and I think I'm going to use a transmission funnel as the cone. Just cut it down to the right diameter and it should work just fine.

I know the boots can fail dramatically quickly. I put in a starter motor a week or two ago and there was no indication of a problem. Had new front tires put on Monday, and the mechanic informed me the whole inside of a wheel was coated in CV joint grease. I looked and the boot was torn about 2/3 of the way!

Seeking a knowledable opinion, not randon jabber filling up the thread.
http://www.lotus60thanniversary.com/forsale.php
Note that Lotus says "We are pleased to advise that the attached list of special offer parts remain after the Lotus parts sale in November. Please email your requirements to..."
Elan M100 C100R0002F R/H DRIVESHAFT 40 356.69 93.61 ($153.98 converted)
Elan M100 C100R0001F L/H DRIVESHAFT 75 367.40 93.61

At these prices is it worth it for me to just order the entire R/H driveshaft instead of just a stretchy-boot, trying to clean what might be a dirt-contaminated outer CV joint (although it displays no sign of a problem at the mo) insitu? Of course the driveshaft is complete with new OE Lotus boots, both inner & outer.
