Custom BOV intake pipe.

Postby Mike_H » Mon 27.10.2008, 01:02

Having seen Maries custom intake pipe I thought I would have a go at making one .

I used a standard 45deg ali pipe and made the adapter flanges and had it all welded up and then had it finished by shot blasting with plastic media.

I have also gone for the Greddy RS BOV and I have also added an air silencer to try and quieten down the whooshing noise , although I'm not sure how effective this is as I have not test run it yet .

Anyway a big thanks to Marie for the idea :D

here's a couple of pictures.

Who is the manufacturer of the alu wire-separators?

Nitro
I made them myself out of a small block of ali

Just drilled 4 holes for the wires and then split the ali down the middle on a band saw .

Clamped together with couple of M3 capheads.

OK then I've ordered some .5" x 2" alu stock. I have a drill press so drilling holes in a straight line is no problem, but let's see how straight I can cut!

Just an update on the air silencer I used on the BOV.

It actually works really well with no whooshing sound at all .

It also saves having to cut into the airfilter box and routing the air back into the system .

The silencer is a Norgren quietaire with a 1/2 inch BSPT male thread .

I contracted the 5/8" cutting to Liddy's Machine Shop.

Just an update on this ,after I made the intake pipe I thought I would have a go at making a matching ali pipe from the air filter to turbo.

The only problem is the angle out of the existing dust bin was wrong and did not fit the standard 45 deg ali pipe so I thought why not make a new air filter bin out of ali with the correct pipe exit angle

I painted the lid black to match but I thought it just didn't look right. Anyway I decided to fit a black lotus badge to it and I think it looks ok now .

It took quite some time to make it all and at the end of the day I guess I've just gone from a plastic dust bin to an ali dust bin :D

Anyway here are a few photos .

WOW! You've been quite busy, nice one :D

Does the connection from turbo to dustbin leave you with enough free play? (movement)
As the dustbin is bolted (or isn't yours) on the frame and the other end is on the block, you could introduce a lot of stress on the dustbin or worse: on the turbo.
From the pictures i can't see how flexible the 2 joints are, but i thought i just remind you (better safe than sorry)

How does the weight compares to the original dustbin?

Thanks for all the positive comments and the

The bin is bolted to the chassis just like the original one and the 2 silicone hoses are quite flexible so there is no problem with any stresses so far ;-)

I'm not sure on the weight but as the original was all plastic and rubber it probably does weigh a little bit more but nothing to worry about .

The bin actually cost me nothing as all the material was from the scrap bin at work

It did take quite some time to make all the various parts and get them welded up and I'm sorry to say that I don't have any plans to make any more , also living down here at the bottom of the world it is very expensive to ship stuff to and from the UK.

Also I forgot to mention that the pipe end has an internal taper welded to the pipe to reduce the Dia to the same as the inlet size.

Here is a picture of how I did it.
