At least I don't have to worry about emissions testing where I is.

My exhaust got fitted on Saturday.
I have not taken any pics yet but mine sits slightly to the near side of the bumper aperture. There is plenty of clearance for vibration in either direction.

My old exhaust had a couple of minor leaks. The engine also had a weird lumpy sound before fully warm, even though it ticked over fairly smoothly.
This has all changed. The engine now springs into life with a slight growl before settling to a lovely low purr. My car seems to be fairly quiet at all times, although it does sound noticeably lower than before. It sounded good in the local underground Sainsbury's car park tonight:- Not rough & roar, just a low warble. It does not pop & splutter on deceleration either.

I agree with Chris about the power change. It just feels a more powerful car even without the turbo running. The turbo cuts in more gradually and top end is further improved. I don't experience boost creep so I guess I may be one of the lucky ones (or it's in the post).

It has made my wastegate fluttering a little more audible, which will be soon be solved by the addition of a BOV.
It is nice to have got rid of my old, slightly leaky stock exhaust. I believe I have the only 2¼ system with the extra silencer, so that may have made it a little too subtle for some. I like it though.

I like it.....lots. :D

Garry, thanks for arranging it.

I neglected to mention that on overrun and deceleration i get a burble (which is rather nice!!) from the exhaust also the odd muffled bang (nowhere near as loud as i've heard from a peco).

I'm just still amazed at what it has done to the performance, transformed the car.
Could the 'Hokey-Cokey' actually be what it's all about?

I agree.

I have a 2.25 exhaust with precat and no maincat and has been in use for a few weeks. Still think the sound is just right with the low burble on cruising just below the general noise of the car. No pops or bangs on overun and no knocks from the exhaust over bumpy roads. Noise makes the car sound as though it has a larger lump than 1.6. Sum up, performance increase, sounds right and has the best looking tailpipe I have seen on a M100 = bargain.
Can't find anything to dislike so far, Piper have done a great job thanks Gary.

Fred,

They are specials - I had a batch of the stainless ones made up specially. You can get them from SJs or, if there is sufficient interest to make it worthwhile, I could get another batch made up - post interest on this thread.

Had my exhaust fitted a few days ago but today was the first chance I've had to take the car for a good blast as my cast (broken hand) has now been removed. To say I am impressed is an understatement.

The sound is extremely nice roof up or down, a deep rumble that is louder than standard but still civil when at low revs increasing to a deep, smooth roar when on boost. As has been mentioned the sound is that of a much larger engine. On the overun I have noticed a burble with the odd (very odd) pop which is quite nice when compared to others I have heard with there gunshot bangs.

Performance wise, I am very suprised. I was expecting a small improvement but the improvement seems to be massive which has left me questioning other things (see bottom). This may be to having the PCE and the Sports CAT over the standard CAT but both on and off boost performance seems to be greatly improved. As an example I tested off the line acceleration up a local dual carriageway (Annesley By-Pass towards Hucknall for the locals) which is on my route to work and I was going appreciably faster when I past a certain marker than I normally do with the standard exhaust.

As for fitting, I cannot personally comment as I had it fitted for me. The local garage that fitted it though commented that it was extremely easy to fit and very well made and they encountered no problems when fitting. They commented that it was "a very nice system".

I do have a couple of questions about boost creep though. The garage that fitted the exhaust ran out of time to properly port the wastegate and only managed to skim it whilst the Turbo was in situ. On driving the car despite trying/testing I have only experienced the boost creep fuel cut-off once whereas similar acceleration on other occaisions was fine. When selecting a lower setting on my mountain V5 chip boost creap is evident with the boost needle slowly rising to maximum although no matter the setting and gear I always seem to hit the rev limiter before the fuel cut-off (obviously I've not tested this to the rev limiter in 5th). So the questions:

1) What boost pressure does the fuel cut-off activate, Is it just above 1 Bar?
2) Could the large increase in performance be due to boost creep rather than the exhaust?

1) I think various chips are set between .8 & .95
2) Y-E-S. But ALL boost increase, not just creep, can be attributed to the exhaust. It allows increased boost, and increased boost = increased performance.

Since you installed the PCE & exhaust at the same time, you rightfully noticed a HUGE increase. Anyone who buys an exhaust sans PCE has left out (the part with) the best return for the money.

Porting the wastegate involves removing the turbo & exhaust manifold, which is the time-consuming bit.
I am not sure how close you would get to this when fitting a PCE, you would not get close when replacing the exhaust.

I had a quick look at the thread for stainless steel studs. Is this the only part I need before "launching the project"??? Actually, I think I'll do it early January -lack of time now!

Anyway, I'm just a bit surprised that amongst the 15 guys who ordered the Piper system, it seems we are a few to have boost creep. Or may be they did not fit the exhaust yet?

My exhaust is certainly fitted. I haev not driven the car very far since, but have certainly used full throttle & tried to induce creep, but have not seen it.
It has been documented on here somewhere that this can be a bit hit & miss. I do not have a PCE (yet  ), which can make a difference too.

The reason I was commenting about it before was that I really have to work at it to hit the cut-off on the road (it would probably be easier on the track). I have to accelerate hard at max boost through 1st to 5th and I've still only hit it twice even with really trying to. With the V5 switcher the boost peaks at 0.95 bar anyway which makes me think its creeping slightly but balances just below the cut-off if that makes sense. When the switcher is set lower the boost creeps up but doesn't always hit the top of the gauge.

Of course I could be talking ballsacks :-D

Just as a heads up when considering which exhaust to get if you have an S2...

I realise there is anecdotal evidence to suggest that S2s don't require a cat to pass the MOT emissions test, however I sent mine for testing after having fitted one of Nitro's PCEs along with my PECO so the car was completely de-catted. I had a failure note, (one of) the reason for fail... excess CO2.

I'm not saying my car is well tuned and running perfectly (although there is nothing discernibly wrong).

Just be aware of this... fortunately my catted Piper is laid out on the garage floor ready for fitting. :-D

Ailwyn,

Out of interest, what %age did it show on the MOT?

I know that there is no actual adjustment pot on the S2, but with my SE i went from 4.2% down to 2.7% just by moving the CAS (admittedly, it was set to 22 deg instead of the correct 16  ) so even with your highly maintained car, a degree or 2 might make enough of a difference. (I can lend you a digital CO meter if you want to borrow it).

Dave,

I haven't got the figures I'm afraid.

Had a list of failures on the brakes so it's a waiting now on the BB 4 corner change, I also need to replace the two streches of pipe that I didn't do last time (the ones that run front to back). I may try setting the timing before the next test and leaving the exhaust as-is, all the HT stuff was replaced in the spring along with the O2 sensor, so timing and (lack of) pre-cat should be the only two factors.

The max limit for cat equipped cars (or ones which *should* have one), ie 1st Registered after 01/08/1992 is 0.5% CO at idle (0.3% at fast idle) - this applies to 'factory built' cars - amateur built ones didn't change from the previous 3.5% CO until 1st August 1998.

Question is, was the S2 a distinctly different model in the eyes of the legislation, or did it have to be?

Nick Chase (who had a beautiful S2 and who had an aftermarket de-catted system) told me that his MOT tester classed the S2 as just an evolution of the M100 and so applied the original SE limits to it, which meant he sailed through at MOT time.

BTW after fitting my V5 mine came down to 0.65% - it's gone up a bit since so I need to keep an eye on it, but it's still nowhere near 3.5%.

Basicall, the legislation doesn't care about what the car is called - just when it was registered!

Anything post August '92 has to be below 0.5% CO, and manufacturers enabled their cars to get that low by various means - most notably using a cat.

As such, it doesn't have to have a cat, but it does have to be below 0.5% CO

If a tame MOT tester has a different slant on it, that is up to him - however, with the new computerised MOT tests, the computer tells you what the limits for the car are (depending on VIN entered when 'booking on'), and if the reading from the analyser don't fit, then it wont give you a ticket :?
