Ekkers,
Just to reiterate, the job is NOT difficult, but it is time consuming.
If approached in a logical fashion, knowing what bits you will need to replace before you start (mainly the studs for the wastegate manifold and maybe some nuts/bolts for the exhaust downpipe) it can easily be done in a day.
There is a good write up somewhere on the forum, so the way i see it you have 4 choices:-
1) Have a go youself - it isn't that hard
2) Let a local mechanic have a go, but give them a print-out of what you actually want doing, so they can base costings on what will need to be done, not just on what they may think to start with (prevents nasty/surprising final bills!)
3) Pay strong money to someone who knows what they are doing, has the facilities to do the job, and the spares back-up to sort out any bits which break unexpectedly - thats why they can quote so much.
4) Leave it as it is

Just the one now, but this one's mine! - and it will be finished eventually..... - but also temporary custodian of a project until it is finished enough for Angie to drive it
...oh, and a 2006 Freelander destined for the jungles of The Gambia - 4500 miles across roads, desert and tracks - what could possibly go wrong?
