my windscreen is cracked, and i'm not sure it will pass an MOT, in fact if i have wordw ith the MOT bloke i'll make sure it fails

so, i therefore have to change my screen, and now that seals are available, and if i'm right Lotus recomend changing the seals with the screen, how would i go about getting the screen change people to get hold of a set of seals????

hope thats followable

mick

PS, i#d need side, top and corner finishers too ithink, where would i get some of them????

The need to replace these seals with the windscreen is due to the fact the finishing strips for the screen sit under these.
Screens have been replaced with out these as mine ware but the job was not as good as it could have been if they had been able to replace the A pillar seals, at the time they were not available!
Picture shows what I mean and also shows how the a pillar seals are held in place.

Ordered my seals from Williams of Bristol last thursday and they arrived at my parents house this afternoon, so they are readily available, at the moment :)

long way to go from Doncaster for a screen replacement Sy!!!!

however i have spoken to insurance folks and been to see the fitter they use who assures me he has done M100s before and would do it himself instead of letting his workforce loose on what he considers a "cracking little car"

have spoke to chris foulds motors who would be able to supply the seals, not sure about the finishing strips tho, thats the next thing to source
now i have one, i just want to keep tinkering with it!!!!!!!
sorry mum :(

Notwithstanding the geographical/logistic problem, Mick, I recommended PM 'cos they've got all the bits, AFAIK.

For those in the U.S. looking to source seals: If you haven't yet, they are available. I never even tried Dave Bean (the normal US source for Elan parts), or a dealer. I went to SJ Sportscars website (sjsportscars.co.uk) and submitted a quote for several parts they list, including a LH a-post seal (about 60GBP), both sides intermediate seals (about 20GBP/each), and a few other odds and ends. Steve at SJ got back to me by email 2 days later, and I paid with a credit card. he said the a-post seal would come from lotus, and the whole order will be able to be posted by thursday (this was as of today, Monday). Every indication is you can go through SJ's if you need to.

Note: I put a new a-post seal on that LH side just a few months ago, and it is crap. It's new old stock, so has been sitting around in its original plastic bag for years, and when it rains, the seal absorbs the water like a sponge, then the water starts coming through to the inside. It's worse than the one it replaced. I'm thinking the new one I'm getting will work much better. Apparently, age kills these seals, even if they've never been out of the bag.

Can somebody vouch for the quality (robustness/waterproofness) of these new A seals as I am tempted to buy. Mine have been padded out by a previous owner with additional stick on rubber trim so would be good to tidy them up with new. I bought a new centre rubber (above the door) and when I went to adjust it my finger and thumb managed to pull a chunk out out of it quite easily :o - it seems to be made of something very nasty and I ended up putting the original back on.

Problem solved.

But worth explaining that problem, perhaps.

When SGT looked this morning, A pillar seals were £123 each.

They're no longer a dealer, so I wasn't unduly fussed that they weren't fully up to speed.

So I rang Merritts, who gave the same high price.

Bollocks, I thought. Have Lotus stuck the price back up?

Cue a phone call to Lotus.

No. The price was still £64 plus VAT each, and all dealers should have had a service bulletin (LPB 021-08) in October 2008 detailing the msrp of £64.00 plus vat.

Ordered.

4 years and I now have new A pillar seals :D (work done by Chris Neil in Northwich, Cheshire). The seals appear to be more substantial than what was on my car (probably down to 17 years of wear and tear).
