Who said anything about driving on the public roads?

I assumed we were talking about private roads and/or tracks! Rip wouldnt do 108mph on a public road......or would he?

Anyways, isnt boost creep related to throttle position and revs? And not the actual speed? Do you get boost creep in lower gears as well?

All I do know, is that I dont want to be following Rip when he takes his eye off the gauge and he suffers fuel cut right in front of me!

Sorry for the off-topic

Every Elan is different. Your creep may not be 'bad' enough to induce overboost.
I like my boost creep. It has increased my boost but I can easily control the amount of creep with my right foot. Even at 100% throttle in 5th gear, overboost did not occur until 108 Km per hour & I was deliberately trying to induce it. A slight backing off on the throttle & I would have been fine while still having plenty of power.

You make that sound easy. In my unlit, cold garage with barely enough space to fit the car itself?
& lose my highly enjoyable boost creep too, going back to .65 bar boost?

Doesn't sound very appealing does it?

I rarely drive at over 5000rpm anyway & there is enough power for me to be backing off anyway. I would prefer to drive by the rev counter too, except that the Elan's is no more than a token gesture. It is highly inadequate & is something I really must look into some time. Plenty of projects higher on my list first though.

Have you lot got numb feet or something? Controlling boost with my right foot is no problem.

I'm really going off this idea if porting the head is A. So much trouble. And B. So expensive.
I'm nowhere near capable of doing it myself! And am reluctant to spend a lot of extra money on top of the price of the exhaust. It just doesn't seem to offer value for me.
Perhaps I could find a friendly mechanic willing to give it a go? I thought I'd be looking at a couple of hundred squid to get my waste-gate ported and the exhaust fitted properly and up and running. But you guys have scared me somewhat with talk of eight hours work etc. And Paul Matty qouting 1000 GBP. Hmmm...
Maybe a nice S.J Sportscars stainless exhaust will do the job instead. But I did want a much better sound than the standard poop!

Ekkers,

Just to reiterate, the job is NOT difficult, but it is time consuming.

If approached in a logical fashion, knowing what bits you will need to replace before you start (mainly the studs for the wastegate manifold and maybe some nuts/bolts for the exhaust downpipe) it can easily be done in a day.

There is a good write up somewhere on the forum, so the way i see it you have 4 choices:-

1) Have a go youself - it isn't that hard
2) Let a local mechanic have a go, but give them a print-out of what you actually want doing, so they can base costings on what will need to be done, not just on what they may think to start with (prevents nasty/surprising final bills!)
3) Pay strong money to someone who knows what they are doing, has the facilities to do the job, and the spares back-up to sort out any bits which break unexpectedly - thats why they can quote so much.
4) Leave it as it is

Don't be scared. The Piper is a superb product. It is a huge improvement over stock. Looks & sounds match the performance improvement too. You won't regret buying one.
Don't be scared of boost creep either. I had to push VERY hard to induce overboost in cold weather (which makes this more likely). It is also VERY easy to control.

Get yourself a Piper. You'll love it I promise.

Happy new year mates!

I have been looking at piper's website, but I have not found any exhaust system for a Lotus Elan.

Am I missing something?

Thanks!!

IIRC, Garry did mention that he was not going to add this to their catalogue.
If you give them a call & mention LEC, they should be able to oblige.

If you find one of Pipers posts on this thread it will have a telephone number which always seems to go straight through to Garry.

Tell him that you're from LEC and he'll know all the bits and options you need.

Very helpful and knowledgable bloke, nothing is too much trouble (and the VAT decrease is in your favour now as well).

I was part of the original order, but then decided on the PCE just before Christmas to go with it - a phone call on Friday pm had it on my doorstep on Monday am - if i had phoned in the morning, i might have got it even quicker but i the missed Friday courier collection.

I showed the PCE to a guy at work who used to be a Stainless fabricator in a previous job - he reckons the price we are getting this kit for is a real billy bargain, bearing in mind that it is low-volume production, excellent quality, great workmanship and attention to detail, and a full lifetime guarantee.

All in all, i don't think you'll be disapointed if you go down the Piper route.

Oh yes, if you get one you absolutely must get a PCE too, or you're leaving the biggest restriction in the system.

Hey Garry, I see you're on VX220.org. I told the guys on there about the Piper i have on the Elan and how pleased i am with it. They're very noise conscious on there cos they sometimes have problems on track days. I've got a Miltek on my VX now but would have had a piper if i had known!

edit/ that was with a 2 1/4"

While that's a little higher than I might have expected, do you know what distance the test was taken from and at what RPM the peak noise occurred?

In theory, both could could make a significant difference to the reading couldn't they?

The microphone was about an inch or 2 from the tail pipe and the revs were at 3/4 of redline which is standard practice for a static noise test. The car was well warmed up as well, don't get noise tests done on cold cars they will be noisier as well as the fact you are revving the engine quite hard. Also when doing the test build up the revs slowly, this will avoid over revving and extra noise.
