Glove Box Key Revisited - USA

This topic has not been broached yet this year. HAve a locking glove box - no key. Any suggestions?

Shall I pull it off and take the lock assembly to a locksmith?

The rule I've always followed on convertibles is that when someone has already been bold enough to enter your car, that flimsy glovebox lock will only annoy them, and you'll end up with broken bits. Put anything really valuable in the boot.

Wise words. However, I am one of those people that cannot cope with having a lockable glove box that does not lock. Secondly, I am tired walking around with my Alpine faceplate poking out of my pocket. I understand that it is not an anti-theft solution, just a deterrent.

I am planning to pull it off and take it to the smithy.

I completely agree with nitro. If somebody breaks into the car, getting into that glovebox is nothing. If they find it locked, they'll just break it, and take the faceplate anyway. Then you'll have a buggared glovebox, and you still won't have the faceplate.

I have my tomtom on a mount where the digital clock used to be. I have an Alpine ipod head unit, with a removable faceplate, and the ipod in the glovebox. In warm weather, I often leave the car for short times with the roof down. I don't worry about the ipod or the faceplate, and I take the tomtom off before I park and get out, and put it on the floor under the seat. I'd just rather lose an ipod or a faceplate then have somebody do more serious damage to the car trying to get to them. If I have anything more valuable (not so easy to replace), I put it in the trunk.

BTW, for those who modify their cars with a remote trunklid release cable, keep in mind there's a reason it didn't come with one -- security.

Also, one of the things I plan to do is get a security system installed with a proximity sensor. The Porsche 914 I had 15 years ago had a security system that had a sensor. I left it with the roof off all the time, and that alarm would go off if anybody stuck a hand in, even just barely.
