Bottom balljoint part number?.

Postby Jamie N » Tue 29.05.2007, 08:45

Removed my bottom balljoint(without a press  ) and now need to find a replacement, does anyone have a part number or know of an alternative?.

I had a spare one sitting from a crx which is virtually identical, but just a fraction too loose in the bore.

Hi, according to the Parts manual it is A100C6020F

(I think they were on the parts sale list - I got one cheap and then my local blacksmith broke it trying to push it into the TCA!)

Hope this helps

Thanks Jim,i managed to source one by going through the stock at a local motor factors, the one i got is identical except a larger flange at the base which is not a problem as it sits perfectly on the LCA.

For reference its from a E30 BMW,84-91 model.

Dromong,

Nice one! Perhaps you could put a post on parts cross-reference for future use.

Cheers

Does anyone happen to know the size of the nyloc nut and it's thread?
I mullered one of mine at the weekend and I've used up my only spare (it was lucky that I had one at all).

It looks as though they're the same nut for the upper and lower balljoint, and also the track rod end.

And I would hasten to add - learn from my cock-up, and buy half a dozen of the things before you start the job!

Lacking just one nut nearly kept me off the road altogether, which would have been seriously embarrassing to have to admit to work when I couldn't drive in.

Basically, I would like to know if yours ball joints look like this? I want to make sure my setup is original equipment or not.

AND why is jimbob's balljoint looking different from mine? My M100 S2's ball joint looks FLATTENED!

kmckmc,

My lower balljoints look like the ones in your pic (in 1 case even has the same split rubber boot!!). This applies to 3 Elans I've owned and 1 I've worked on. Never seen one like jimbobs.

Cheers

I have a strange feeling we have been through a similar exercise with the track rod end only to find the taper was some what unique. It may well be worth checking the taper in this case as it may be different.
Just because it fits the wishbone does not make it correct as there are other dimensional details that need to be correct.

I will check the taper on the original one I have here and post the results

The top / bottom ball joints and track rod ends all use M12 x 1.5 metric fine nylock nuts.
The bottom ball joint states 'thin' nut but standard nuts fit OK.

Is this meant to be this shape or is it bent?

If it is, not sure of how, as it is bent in a strange place! in the thickest part????????????????????

another view pin turned 90 degrees

The bit I do not get is where it appears bent is 2.5mm ish thicker in diameter than at the very bottom where it meets the ball, I would have thought it would have bent at the smallest diameter not the thickest????????????.
I was looking to see if I could sort out what the taper was suposed to be. 6-1 etc

Funny you should mention it Bob - my old TRE would appear to be similarly bent whereas the new one definitely isn't.

As you say, if yours is unintentional, why there? If it is intentional, WHY and how are you meant to set it up? :smt017

Of course, when the Balljoint taper is engaged in the hub carrier, the point where it's bent may well become the weakest point when the hub carrier is subjected to a severe blow from a kerb or pothole? - Just a thought...

They will have been bent in action.

I can’t see why anyone would ever need to make an offset spindle but if they did they would need to provide an alignment indicator.

If it’s original equipment, and bent, it’s been in the wars. If it’s the wrong part it might not have had the necessary amount of movement for the suspension travel.
