Thanks for everybodies kind words. Remaining concious throughout the accident and rescue and then coming back and seeing my own blood splattered over the inside of the car really drove home the seriousness of what I have survived, I still dont think myself completly lucky (more twisted luck) as I crashed in the first place.

My god I'm stiffening up now though, the good news is the swelling in my face is going down but the bruises are coming up a treat. I went back past the spot I crashed earlier today (as a passenger) and I actually crashed a bit before I thought I had. Looking at it again I see I managed to make it up a six foot bank to get to the trees which must have sent me flying through the air.

I'm just waiting on the insurance to pick up and assess the car now, looking at the prices on autotrader low mileage S2's seem to have kept there value reasonably well so I've just got to hope they dont try to diddle me. When I get them to cough up I can start looking for a new one, although I am pissed off that I'm going to have to start again with the modding. :-D

If you need anything from this side of the pond (plug wires? :) ) for the new car, let me know.

Thats one of the things I managed to rescue from the boot along with the tool kit, my tools, my stereo minus the volume knob and Enrights old gear cables, although it was disconcerting to find some petrol sloshing about in the boot  .

Oddly what I couldn't find which I would have expected to were my LEC stickers, my lotus tax disc holder and tax disc, no doubt someones trophy (I know one of the fire crew at work rescued my number plates!! which will no doubt be displayed when I'm back). I may have to go for a walk in the woods and see if I can find any of the other missing bits and bobs.

A pillar? I don't see any A pillars in those pictures...

Glad to hear you made it out of that wreck - my wife will not be seeing those pictures, I assure you.

I won't be showing these pic's to Nicky.

Funny enough she did not complain one bit about me forking out for the rool hoops from Simon.

Looking at that I'm really glad I have them even though I'm a Dwarf.

Glad to see you escaped and even more that you are already considering a new one.

The Elan is a nasty mess. Heartbreaking, but at least your injuries are not severe.

OMG, that's a helluva surprise to come back to Graham!
I've just got back from holiday and this was one of the first posts I saw (out of a catch-up list of over 250)!
This is the sort of accident when you really do have to thank your lucky stars to still be around to talk about it.
Gutted for you that such a nice Elan has been comprehensively killed, and shocked at how one I knew so well has ended up.
If you need any help salvaging bits before the vultures (sorry, I mean insurers) get their talons into it, just yell.
Anything that you can keep in order to transfer to your next one can only be small compensation, but it's got to be worth it.
Meanwhile, glad to hear you're keeping your chin up.

Thanks for the call Neil, much appreciated. After our conversation I've just had a discussion with the insurers and have been assured that it is their policy that I always have the option to buy back the car for salvage which I fully intend to do. I've now got to hope that they stick to their word.

I'm insured through Adrian Flux with Highway, does anybody have any experiance with them regarding write-offs and buying back for salvage?

Hi G
Glad to hear your getting sorted.

IIRC mine was with Highway through Adrian Flux- I bought the car back, but I have to say, at a premium. They know what its worth to you and I'm sure they'll ask you for a lot more than what theyd get from a scrappy. I'd have a serious thought about what is left that is salvageable first, cos looking at the piccys there wont be much to attract the scrappys anyway.
Also they didnt work out the resale price from the value of the bits left- it was a percentage of the payment that would be made to you for the car, plus a bit extra.

I argued over the value of the car and increased that by over 25% from the original offer, sending in photos and statements as to condition from other LECers. However, the increased offer meant that they got more off me for the scrap. Mine did have a lot off reusable parts on it which made it worthwhile to a lot of LECers.

I also had the car returned to me rather than retained at the repairers.

Exactly the same happened to me. Think it was in the region of 25% of the final payment to buy the car back, which i did. Took bits off like the S2 wheels, nardi and all the stereo stuff and sold it for the same price. If they offer you £7k it will probably cost you £1750 to buy it back and you will have to look if there is enough on it to salvage at that price! Seeing as you did such a good job on it

There is. Definitely. Just in the cost of upgrades alone.
Then there are plenty of good bits that would be fine - e.g. engine, gearbox, turbo...

She was a lucky car, too, in that she took good care of you in the final seconds. I'd want the nose badge on my next Elan, if I were you.

If I can get her back there's going to be a damn site more of her in my next one than just her badge. She was my baby and always did everything I asked of her and more. Not only being a solid daily driver doing more mileage than a lot of cars but she kept going through the worst of it including my bungling and general mis-care.

Through the ice and snow when others were stuck she soldiered on passing them all to bemused looks and getting home, when asked to plow across a muddy airfield she did so with no complaint once again to looks of disbelief, hell even when something broke she would keep on going (Stuck in 5th gear on the Fish & Chip run @ Hethel anyone).

A bit like me it takes a hell of a lot to stop the little warrior and if I've got anything to do with it shes not stopped yet!!

Bugger, I feel all melancholic now. :smt022

She looks Cat A, in which case you won't be allowed to buy for salvage, surely?

As I understand it, and someone more knowledgeable will doubtless put me right, there are four main categories of write off:

Category A - Entire Vehicle must be crushed.
Category B - Vehicle may not be returned to road. Undamaged parts may be sold.
Category C - Repairable. Possibly structural damage. Cost of damage (at main dealer prices and labour rates) is more than book value of vehicle.
Category D - Repairable. Probably non-structural damage. May have been economic to repair, but insurer doesn't want to.
(Category F - Damaged by fire.
Category X - Repairable. Minor Damage.)

Category A - May not be resold. Entire vehicle must be crushed. Total burnout or flood damage (salt or foul water). Severely damaged with no serviceable parts, or already stripped out shell. DVLA require "Notification of Destruction". If your car was Cat A, you're absolutely f***ed as it must be crushed. All of it.

Category B - Vehicle itself may not be resold. Damaged beyond economical repair, usually with severe structural damage. DVLA require "Notification of Destruction". Parts can be removed and sold. The damage will have compromised the car's structural integrity.

A Category C write off is officially categorised as Repairable salvage, where the cost of repairs exceeds book value. The car can be sold complete to the Trade or Public. Recorded as "Category C" at DVLA. Category C vehicles' V5 documents are returned to DVLA. You re-apply, to DVLA or at your local VRO, for registration on the original identity once you have fixed it up, MOTed it and want to Tax it. Re-registration removes the Category C classification, but evidence it was at one time Category C remains on the vehicle's record at DVLA (and HPI and AA and the others). Cars must now have a VIC inspection before returning to the road. This costs £35 and will involve comparing the vehicle presented against information held by DVLA, such as the vehicle identification number, make, model, colour and engine number. The VIC will also compare the record of previous accident damage with evidence of damage repair as well as checking other components to confirm the age and identity of the vehicle. It does not guarantee the roadworthiness of the vehicle, so does not guarantee that the car is straight, for example.

Category D is officially also Repairable salvage. It may have had minimal damage, probably not structural, but the insurer has elected not to repair the vehicle, even though it might be economic to do so, and has instead sold it (perhaps back to the owner) as salvage. Cat D cars are often stolen and recovered after the claim has been paid. Or they may be unusual models or grey imports where the difficulty of obtaining new parts hinders a quick repair. A Cat D car does not need the VIC inspection to return it to the road, but will be recorded as such with HPI, AA, etc.

Any minor damage to the front clam of an Elan is likely to result in Cat C or D categorisation, as this is beyond economic repair at main dealer rates, or close to it. The car can, however, be made as good as new with a donor clam, or with a good fibre glass repair, or at 'mate's rates'.
