Please help identify items in this photo?

Postby martin_bailey_1 » Fri 10.04.2009, 16:38

Hi folks,

Could I possibly trouble you for some help/confirmation please :?:

Here's a photo of the heater blower assembly, immediately behind the glovebox, in my '90 SE (with aircon.)

Dsc00964x.jpg

Could someone please tell me:

1. What's the purpose of the small corrugated rubber pipe :?:
2. Should the free end of said pipe actually be connected to the tube just above the corner of the orange plate :?: When the fan's running, I can feel some air issuing from the tube, so I wondered whether the rubber pipe was intended to feed this air into the heater motor (possibly to cool it :?: )
3. Does the orange plate conceal the heater speed control resistors :?:
4. Am I right in thinking that the large blue plug in the centre of the photo is the ALDL connector (for hooking up an Elanscan interface etc.) :?:

and

5. How long before I regain the use of my left arm ..... ( which I've just had jammed behind the dash, reconnecting the hazard warning light switch) :D :D

Many thanks,

Martin.

1. What's the purpose of the small corrugated rubber pipe :?:

Cool the blower motor
2. Should the free end of said pipe actually be connected to the tube just above the corner of the orange plate ?

Yes
When the fan's running, I can feel some air issuing from the tube, so I wondered whether the rubber pipe was intended to feed this air into the heater motor (possibly to cool it :?: )

Yes
3. Does the orange plate conceal the heater speed control resistors?

Thought they were thermistors to detect temp. but you might be right .
4. Am I right in thinking that the large blue plug in the centre of the photo is the ALDL connector (for hooking up an Elanscan interface etc.) ?

No idea
5. How long before I regain the use of my left arm ..... ( which I've just had jammed behind the dash, reconnecting the hazard warning light switch) :D :D

I find it can take around 4 hours to recover from the 'Lotus Position' -- on your back, with the seat removed and your feet in the hood stowage.

Chaps,

Fantastic response..... you're all 'Elan gods'

After reconnecting the rubber pipe, I removed the orange plate and confirmed that it did house the blower speed control resistors, (as you can see from this pic) :

heater blower resistors.jpg

Unfortunately ( :!: ) all three resistors were fine. (I say unfortunately, because my 'maximum' fan speed was inoperative, and I'd guessed/hoped that the problem might be caused by one of these resistors failing :( )

However, on checking the wiring diagram, I found that the switch setting for the highest fan speed bypasses the resistors and goes via (yes, you've guessed it) a relay :!:

So, If anyone encounters the same problem, don't waste time (like me) grubbing around in the footwell...... just remove the binnacle cover and replace relay 'D'. (Top row, 2nd from the left in this pic:) ... a 2 minute fix  Doh !

Anyway... thanks for the help and advice folks...... have a great Easter ...... see you next weekend at Donington :D

Cheers,

Martin.
