Since I've owned my car (2 000 miles) I've noticed that when braking in reverse that there is a noticeable (felt through steering and audible) clunking from the front end. It's been getting worse (possibly depending on how hard I brake). I investigated and found that the nearside caliper has a bit of wobble in it so have bought some new sliders but nearly enough to explain what feels like back lash in the drivetrain. I had a waggle of the RH (offside) driveshaft - the long one that seems to be supported mid way by a bearing thingy from the gearbox and found a lot of axial movement at the joint (inboard CV?) - possibly where the 'backlask' is occuring. Checking on the 'Lotus60thanniversary' link for sale part prices I can get a RH driveshaft for £100 ish instead of £360

. Has anybody experienced a similar symptom and come to the conclusion that it's the driveshaft? I'm assuming that at 100k miles this is an original part on mine.

Could be any number of things I guess, but when mine started doing this, it was the rear engine mount!!
The long arm one that goes into the chassis - all the mounting bolts to the backbone were loose - took ages to find

Thanks Gordon. Will check out the mount first before spending any money. Hard to imagine that the engine 'rotates' much but I suspose a number of worn parts could stack up to movement. I was trying to canvass responses to the robustnesss of CV joints/driveshafts but despite the 'claim' on HonestJohn.co.uk that these take a hammering and fail often, judging by the response so far, these don't appear to be any more problematic than any other car.

Engine mounts would be the first place I'd check to.
Lots of torque in a transverse engine setup.
