Jackshaft Bearings

Postby Turners » Thu 14.05.2009, 18:54

I have just had a new bearing pressed into the arm that holds the jackshaft,
the bearing for reference is a 63mm*30mm*18mm part number 6206-2RS manufactured by MBA

The two rubber seal are size 43*56*9 and 38*62*8 neither of these I replaced as they were removed without damage.

Lotus only supply the complete shaft reference A100F6033F

That information needs to be put on the Wiki, for me it's going to be cut and pasted for my special file.

Many thanks

Excellent news and thanks for the information however the specification for 6206 bearings is 30mm x 62mm x 16mm - to avoid potential confusion in the future, could you confirm that 6206 is the correct reference please? I have also done a quick search on the seals but have not found an exact match; could you possibly confirm how the measurements were made and whether they could have a tolerance due to ageing/wear etc.?

It is already Wikid Richard as I know ESM had one of his cars off the road for some time.

Interestingly the tab on the box says 63mm*63mm*18mm part number 6206-2RS the bearing has stamped on it 6206RS

I used a micrometer on the old bearing an it measures 62mm* 30mm internal and 16mm deep

The new bearing is pressed in the arm so all I can measure is the internal diameter which is 30mm

You should just be able to stick a lever in the V where the edge of the newspaper is and prise them apart.

having a look at it and im not sure where you mean are either of the markers pointing in the right place? the blue arrow is pointing at the only place that seems to move at all if you pull the two sections apart, which may explain my confussion.

If you stick a crowbar in where the red arrow is and twist it, the 2 halves should come apart fairly easily.

I'm gonna have to disagree with Neil on this (sorry  ).

The seperation occurs where your blue arrow is. I removed mine by inserting a screwdriver behind the flange and hitting it. Its probably possible to use a leaver where the red arrow is, as long as you bear against something other than the flange part. You'd need to use a pretty large lever to do that.

My method slightly damaged the flange part, but I knew I was replacing the whole driveshaft anyway so it didn't matter.

Matt,

Going on what Owen says, and to avoid damage to the flange it might be better to put the jackshaft in the vice and knock the drive shaft off using a piece of wood on the CV.

I certainly wouldn`t try removing as Owen suggest, you will damage the metal flange  I remove the shaft as Neil describes but this was when the drive shaft was still on the vechile. Since yours is off the car Rays advice would be best, if you haven`t got a vice then just stand on the jack shaft and give it a good sharp whack using a piece of wood and a lump hammer were Ray has pointed out on the picture above. Shouldn`t be that difficult to seperate.

i can confirm you dont want to use the metal flange as a lever its not very strong, block of wood to the back on the cv joint worked a treat. So no i have the jackshaft seperated is it just a matter of buying the bearing and taking the whole lot to someone who can press the old one off and a new one on?

pics of the shafts coming apart to help visualise it for anyone trying this in future.

A few questions before I tackle the same job!

Is the bearing just a press fit, or is it retained by circlips in any way?

Is the shaft a press fit aswell, or retained in some other way?

Why is a type 2rs bearing (sealed) used, when the whole setup is then further sealed by two more seals - is the whole thing packed in grease? - surly if it is, using a 2rs bearing will prevent that grease getting into the bearing?

Is the OEM bearing a 2rs type or and open type?

Is the square profile C clip (used to retain the jackshaft to the driveshaft) available from anyone other than lotus?

Gordon.

Hopefully Matt will be able to supply the answer if the seals are easily removed ... it may turn out to be a plain bearing.

Matt,

Is it now possible to remove the square circlip and tap the complete bearing housing from the jackshaft.

As Turners removed the outer seals without damaging them they must come out easily. Then you’ll be able to see if the bearing is plain or separately sealed.

And ... Is this from your car, or the spare? If yours, is there any play in as we thought?

Gordon,

If the part numbers of the seals are anything to go by it looks as if there’s a step on the shaft, and a step in the housing to retain the bearing.
