Hopefully Matt will be able to supply the answer if the seals are easily removed ... it may turn out to be a plain bearing. (tell me what im looking for and i'll let you know)

Matt,

Is it now possible to remove the square circlip (square circlip removed)and tap the complete bearing housing from the jackshaft (when you say tap.... ive wacked it in every direction some tips would come in handy).

As Turners removed the outer seals without damaging them they must come out easily there does appear to be one seal which i can see but its not coming out easily again any hints/tips apriciated). Then you’ll be able to see if the bearing is plain or separately sealed.

And ... Is this from your car, or the spare? If yours, is there any play in as we thought? (its from my spare car and there is no play at all, but im going to replace it anyway and get new driveshafts just for piece of mind as a few of these seem to be giving up at the moment

If it's not budging easily it is possible that there's a big internal circlip holding the bearing into the housing, and a smaller external clip holding the shaft into the bearing.

Some photos of either side of the bearing housing might help us advise regarding seals & their removal?

I would think that seal would hook out easily enough with a bit of care, using something blunt to lever deep under it, away from the sealing edge... (usual disclaimers regarding heavy handed damage!!)

Once removed, that should hopefully reveal alot more...

What does the other side of the carrier housing look like?

Gordon was wondering why they would seemingly fit a sealed for life bearing (Pictured on page 1) with rubber covering the balls preventing them for benefitting from any grease that the bearing housing seals were holding in. So the question is ... can you see the balls in the bearing or are they covered with an integral seal.

If nothing else had been holding it, circlips for instance, I thought it would have knocked off easily. Shaft end stood vertically on a piece of wood, 1lb hammer tapping evenly around the housing.

It could be a circlip Matt,

You’ll need to get the seal out so you can have a look inside.

There’s only one part of the seal that has any strength to it, hence Gordon’s comment.

the bearing is off, que cheering  , it was pressed off, its a sealed bearing. i'll post up pics when i get home, i did ask them to let me know when they do it so i could watch but they didnt so i can give details on whats involved, but they did bend the metal cover that sits behind the bearing toward the gearbox, so im rather miffed about that. will post pics and details once i get home.

the bearing: 6206 lu ntn japan other writting includes tmb exi (or could be a 1) tmb206exi ss

Thanks for the pictures Matt; just to confirm what they indicate - there were no C-Clips whatsoever?

It would appear that the grease seal is there simply to prevent dirt ingress into the spline joint between the jackshaft & the inboard CV...

No disputing it's a 2RS type bearing!

there was a c-clip it sits behind the bearing on the gearbox side, sorry i didnt include it in the pics.

so the part that got bent during removal, how much do i need to worry and is it something that can be replaced or what?

im also trying to workout where these seals people have mentioned go, the one between the housing and the bearing i know about and i need to replace it although im not sure where to go or what to ask for.

The part that got bent looks quite thin Matt, could it be part on the seal, acting as an adaptor to bring it to a different size? Does it share any measurements, or fit inside the seal exactly?

Where on the shaft does the other circlip fit?

Are there any part numbers on the seals and what do they look like from the side?

As I started this post I thought I would just give an update on replacing the drive shafts

On trying to undo the hub nut on the drivers side I broke two 1/2 drive bars including my snap-on one, I then put my back out and have been in bed for the last week :(

As for the jack shaft, I removed the arm holding the bearing from the shaft by hitting (tapping) with a hyde mallet, the 2 seal's came out with a wide screw driver I think they are just for dust so dont worry two much about damage. them remove the large circlip, the bearing will need pressing out and the new pressed in, this will cost including bearing about 20 quid.

Back to the drive shaft the local "lorry mechanic" came round and undid the hub nut with a 3/4" drive socket set. He removed the hub but had to press the shaft out with a 25 tonne press even this took him 3 days with the hub sitting in the press.

Because of my back the local mechanic has come around and reassembled all the shafts and hub's

All that is left is for me to drive the car and see if this has fixed the vibration

i dont think the part is structural i believe it only acts as a seal to keep crud out, it sits flush inside the housing, no part numbers that i can see. i dont have any of the seals, the one i was picking at lastnight was totaly destroyed, and what was left wasnt given to me when i got the bearing back.
the circlip doesnt sit on the shaft it sits inside the housing just behind the bearing. i'll try to get some pulled apart shots soon. i think i might order two bearings and if its possible look at fitting one to my other shaft and make damn sure the old bearing is take off with more care. But it would be far better to have a jackshaft ready to go in with the driveshafts.

christ i thought i had a hard time of it. hope the back gets better soon mate. thankyou for the info it will come in useful for the next other one.

Not sure on the exchange rate between Indian Rupees and GBP, but line 53 on this spreadsheet shows them at 6Rs.

Edit - Just checked - and at 73 Rupees to the quid, they come in at 8p each  (assuming that I've read it right!)

This may well be a complete red-herring, but I cant get over how similar the Mazda 626 front drive system is:

Mazda 626 driveshafts and jackshaft

What makes it more curious, is that the 'dust seal' 25-742 on the carrier bearing, appears to cross ref to our dust seal??

Matt, How many splines are there on the driveshaft CV end of the Jackshaft?
