J700TUS started at £8,000 and did not sell.

It dropped to £7,500 in or around December, and has not sold at that price.

(Were it a bargain, you'd have expected it to have been 'snapped up' at such a price).

It is currently on eBay at £7,500, and Autotrader at £7,000.

Clearly no-one else thinks that it is "well worth the money at that price."

I've been looking at this car on Ebay: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1992-Lotus-Elan-S ... 1|294%3A50

As well as a comparably priced S2 on Autotrader (see thread in that section).

Does anyone have any views / know this car?

Thanks :)

Hi Matt,

Firstly, I do not know the car, the seller or anything too specific about it.......

....Someone will (perhaps) be along in a minute to comment further on that (or the price!), but a few observations based purely on the advert....

It is a 92 (J plate) SE, but has been fitted with S2 (16") wheels - a popular and accepted/desirable upgrade.

The hood is claimed to be in good condition, and from the photos. loos good - it is an original SE hood (in design, even if not in age), not the later S2 version which is (I believe) the only current option to replace - not a problem in itself, but something to bear in mind for the future.

The milage is 67K - a double-edged sword depending on your own belief and oppinion of use! - it would be handy to establish if it is 'steady milage of 4K a year with regular use, or if it has been sat in a barn for a while - it won't necessarily be a problem either way, but could present different issues if it's been sat around, or used heavily.

3 previous keepers is always a good sign on a car of this age.

Interior looks okay - it has the later 'plain' seats, not the earlier 'striped' ones - (personal preference, again).

Can't see the rubber seals in any of the pics.

Date of reg is 5 years after manufacture, which coupled with the advert stating that it has a cat converter, and 3 keepers, may be an indication that it is an import????????? (or sat in a showroom for a long while). - or just a typing error :-D

The paintwork looks red, not faded - but hard to tell from a picture (even mine looks good in a photo!).

All in all - it looks worthy of a few questions, and possible viewing!
Dave

Just the one now, but this one's mine! - and it will be finished eventually..... - but also temporary custodian of a project until it is finished enough for Angie to drive it

...oh, and a 2006 Freelander destined for the jungles of The Gambia - 4500 miles across roads, desert and tracks - what could possibly go wrong?

Thanks Dave, much appreciated. I think I'll give the guy a call later this 'avo with a view to going to check it out (and the Blue S2 on Autotrader) possibly later in the week. I'm not much of car expert myself, so am waiting on a couple of mates availability to come and check it out with me. Though, having previously owned an Elan, I think I could probably spot a lemon easily enough...

I think the price seems pretty good judging from the info and the photos. £5k-ish, is really the absolute max I'm looking to spend, and this guy says a decent offer will be considered. Personally, I prefer the plain leather over the striped version, but as you say, that's just a matter of preference.

However, the blue S2 on autotrader might be a better buy? That one has new roof seals (though not fitted) and is obviously newer. Sounds like I'd have to supply my own numberplate for it though? Bit of a hassle.

Strangely, the Ebay car is also listed on Pistonheads: http://www.pistonheads.com/SALES/1072286.htm with a different number of previous owners listed. I guess an HPI check would sort that one out though.

I have a hard top from my old Green Elan. Quick respray later and it should hopefully be okay for either of these for the winter months :)

The last picture suggests that the car may have been sat around as there's rust on the rear disc where you'd like to see more clean surface from friction with the pads.
Large gap above nearside rear bumper (compared with off side).
Check out the condition of the swan's neck next to the passenger side headlamp pod - the paintwork appears to be crazed and may be indicative of a front end repair. This could be just water/soap residue from a recent wash, of course.
It doesn't feature in the database, so I can't help any more.
If I didn't have plans for the w/e I'd offer to have a look at it for you being as it's on my patch.
if you can get an extended test drive drag him down my way and I'll hook up Elanscan on to it - dependent upon day/time.

Thanks for the overview Sy. I'd not have spotted the rust on the rear pads, but see it now that you've pointed it out.

I had to google for the 'swan neck' and helpfully found this page: viewtopic.php?t=7207

Still, not totally sure where it is though. Is it the bit at the back of the popup headlights (slightly above and to the right of the chassis sticker)? I think I can see the slightly grazed paintwork you are refering to.

Just had to google ElanScan too. Sounds bloody brilliant! If I can arrange an extended test-drive I may take you up on that offer. Thanks :)

Hello all.

I've been after an Elan for a while but want one for a daily driver so need it to be low miles. this one has been offered to me for less than 2500 so just hoping to get some opinions if anyone knows of it or has anything to say?

Many thanks,

I've put more than 12,000 miles on mine in a year, starting from 109,000. These cars go on well if properly cared for.

Superficially, that car looks pretty good for £2,500. Put a set of original wheels back on it, fit a new cambelt and water pump and deal with the inevitable odds and sods and you'd have a good daily drive Elan, without having spent a fortune. Get one of the local Gods to look at it, but it looks like a good deal to me.

She's in my database!

When auctioned on eBay as Item number 330310845062 she reached £4,100 on 8 March and didn't make reserve.
Another go as Item number 330313233796 fared no better, with an achieved price of just £3,107 on 16 March, again not making the seller's reserve.
The mileage hasn't moved, so she's not in daily use.
When advertised at £6,999 (Item number 330320262634) she didn't get a sniff and remained unsold. That was in May.

Tidy engine bay, nice looking paint (from what you can see, but how recent are the pics, and is that really NMY - the shade looks a tad funny to me), and funny alloys.

All of those mods might lead me to suspect that she hasn't had the gentlest of lives.

Was this not the one in the hall at Donington with a £4500 window sticker (depending on the number plate attached)?? - (it had an E 14 *** plate available)

It looks like it is the same 3 colours of Lotus Racing Yellow (Not Norfolk Mustard), with the front bumper being a different shade to the clam???

Or am i talking out of my rectum again (sleep deprivation - look at the timing on the post :D )

:agree:
Sounds like a Club Lotus member. The car looks distinctive. I have not heard of anyone fitting Recaros in an Elan before so I am sure it would have stood out for that reason :. unlikely to be somebody who regularly posts on here.

I'm pretty sure that she hasn't been up for sale before during these last 12 months or so.

Which Elans were 'pulled' after you won them?

There was a brg one about 3 months ago for 3750 and the blue one I posted above that I was offered for 2800, but on both the sellers went silent and eventually told me they were now sold elsewhere.

I hope he's a genuine seller, 'cos I've just won his auction for a set of gear cables (and sent the money!)

Hi all,

Complete 'Elan Newbie' here and this is my first post - be gentle :-)

Have previously owned 2 Excels which went when the kids were small. Now they are bigger.......

Seen this on Ebay - does anyone know anything of this car - it looks fantastic in the pictures, but I haven't seen it in the flesh yet.

I've been through the buying guide (very helpful, thanks!). Any thoughts/guidance gratefully received.

All the best,

Martin.
