The window on my car goes down ok but jams after three inch on the way
up, i have to drop it a few mm then push it forward to get it to raise,
any ideas welcome

Keep your eye on it until you can get your door trim panel off to clean & grease the tracks (helping it up is a good plan).
DON'T lean on the button, or you're likely to snap the cable, and if that happens the whole job turns into a nightmare.

Could be one of the sliders at the base of the window has come loose and is window jaming on the side impact bar witin the door.

Get your door panel off and have a look inside. you should then be able to see the problem

When lowering the passenger window we get a loud crack as if a coin is being thrown at the window. No other fault with the mechanism is of note. We have tried to ignore it until now. But having the sh!t scared out of you every time you lower the window. And i think the next time we use it, it will shatter. Its only when opening from fully closed. A&M

Both of you need to take the door trim off and then run the window and take a look.

M & A: You'll probably see something that's catching on the edge of the glass and making a loud noise when it snaps free.

whippit: My pax side window used to do a similar thing. I had to help it up by pulling on it. It was a bitch, and embarrassing. I got new sliders, cleaned out the front and rear tracks, re-greased. Then I replaced the center slider and butterfly clip. In my case, I think it was actually the center slider that was the problem.

Just be careful. If you let it go too long, you'll end up with a damaged motor, and the motor and regulator are one unit, and unavailable.

There doesn't seem to be any extra pressure on the motor. It runs as smooth as the drivers side. A&M

You might also want to Check the sliders are held firmly in place.

IIRC you can check the bottom bolts without taking the door apart - they are the two bolts at either end of the door - on the underside of the door skin - lie on your back, open the door and look at the underside - I know it is probably obvious but position the car where you can fully open the door - it sill save you scraping the paintwork - you need a surprising amount of space to do this work.

If you end up taking the door apart - prepare for a frustrating time - it's not difficult but it is fiddley - esp if you haven't done it before.
Get a good supply of rubber gloves - it will help in gripping the glass and will assist in keeping grease off paintwork etc through regular changing.
You might want to get hold of a couple of orange clips, either Vauxhall do them or SJ's SJ100B0010 and a couple of butterfly clips - again SJ's A100B6271S - will cost you about £5 pder door - the orange clip you may or may not destroy when you are taking the door lock button off, the butterfly clip you may well destroy if you decide the glass needs to come out because the plastic goes brittle over time.
Lithium grease for the sliders is a good idea.

Max and Andy - I have been wracking my tiny brain, the only thing I can think of is that it might be that one of the upper stubs which is welded to the slider has sheered off and the loud crack is the stub of the bolt dropping back into the hole - in which case it may be damaging the fibreglass - you may well have to take it apart to have a look.
