Oh dear. I predict that from 2010, there will be two separate series of what is currently referred to as F1 running concurrently, with Ferrari, Renault, McLaren and BMW in one, and the rest in the other.
The Reason ? The lunatics responsible have decided to go ahead with & award the single engine supply contract to Cosworth. Cosworth are a great company, but do the powers that be really expect Renault, let alone Ferrari etc to race a car using a common third party engine ? KERS was / is a total joke, this marks the beginning of the end for F1.

It may be the end for F1 as we know it. The attraction has always been that it is cutting edge. If it loses that edge (which it will if teams are restricted to Cosworth engines) & another series emerges which IS cutting edge, then I believe that will attract all the sponsorship, media etc.
Darts is a great example of a successful split. In the early 90's, the BDO imposed restrictions which caused many players to breakaway & form the PDC. The PDC has flourished & the BDO has effectively become an amateur organisation (ie most BDO players have day jobs so how can they possibly be 'professional' darts players).
Speedway went through a similar thing in 1964 & the breakaway (Provincial) league flourished.
It's the teams which make the sport what it is.
If split does go ahead, FOTA will benefit & stick two fingers up at the FIA.
FOTA will probably be banned from circuits with current FIA contracts but I'm sure there are plenty of other circuits around the world who would welcome them. Silverstone for instance.
