door handle screw snapped and now window wont open??

Postby MattDon » Sat 11.07.2009, 13:49

i asked the question a few weeks ago but with only one responce i thought id try here...

the head and half of the screw in the picture snapped off (as i was unscrewing it) and now the window only opens about an inch before a god awful bang, ive got two questions, first whats the best method for getting the screw out and secondly why has this screw had this effect, ive looked at the manuals and it doesnt seem to be related to window adjustment so im rather confussed.

this whole issue came up after my window was adjusted but something was marking my window when it got about half way down, looking at what was inline with the scratch it looked to be this screw so i setabout removing it, the rest is history.

as always any help will be very greatfully recieved.

Sorry,

I was going to reply sooner, busy lad and all that...

Just remove the head... any way you want...

Drill off the two rivet heads...

The metal will just fall down...

Put metal bit in vice and use Molies to extract the rest of the screw/bolt.

Just thought.... I better answer the other bit of the question...

The screws that normally catch are the internal seal retainer screws, normally the second/third to the back, visible by looking straight down the top...

I'd also put the window adjustment back...

The screw you show would have no effect on the window unless it was previously replaced with one that was too long? The marking on the window, is it on the inside or the outside ? At the point where the window jams can you move the glass back and forwards to free it up? If not loosen all the adjustment bolts so they can move with the window as you try to lower it.

Specky between yourself and a couple of others who keep a close eye on my project thread, youve saved my hide more times than i care to count, so no appology needed. Back to the issue, im not sure ive explained it properly so ive taken a few more pics of the offending screw and the etched window, it maybe the two arnt related, but they both did occur at the same time and the only other thing i had done was to unscrew the screws that had been partly screwed back in (for safe keeping) after the door card was removed, and mount the door card back on. I dont know if its the right screw or not but it is the one that was there when i bought the car, i did notice it was a flat head which i thought was odd???

i cant move the window back out as i wouldnt get a seal on the hardtop and i also need to move the passangers side in about 5mm and stop the play in both windows, the drivers side is ok when up but when part way down rattles badly, and the passangers side flaps around all the time.

You should get a half decent seal any where you put the window...(within reason)

Has your forward upper slider deatched or sheared...

The reason the A-Post don't seal very well is the shiming on the A-Post themselves and broken sliders...combined with tired old seals

Have you removed the self retained anchor nuts by drilling out the two rivets just below the screws,

If the score isn't to bad in the glass it could be removed.

you might have a point about the seals, ive got new a post seals fitted and for some reason the passanger glass isnt sealing against a section of the seal, it almost looks like the very top of the a post seal is pushing the window out but i can see why it wouldcould this be to do with the shimming you mentioned? I dont know about the forward upper slider, i'll have a look at the manual and see if i can work it out. your going to have to explain "remove the self retained anchor nuts by drilling out the two rivets just below the screws" as its sounds bloody scary and rather permanent.

Id get this straight to a specialist if i could afford it, the windows and doors scare the hell out of me.

The door will be fine,

The rivets are there just to stop the captive anchor nuts falling down...

Once the plate is removed and the screwhead fully extracted you can put it back without even riveting...

You can do that slow time...

I'm going to assume the scratch is on the inside ? I did notice you are missing the thick spacer washers that are glued to the back of the door panel bracket.

Good eye. There are several thick spacer washers that mount to the inside of the door card. The use of which (or shorter screws) are mandatory to ensure you don't get scratches on the windows. Surprised you didn't get these scratches before unless the window angle's been adjusted to sit the glass further outboard. Probably not getting a good fit against the seals if that's true.

thanks guys ive been abit busy the last week with the kitchen and bathroom being stripped and rebuilt. your right about the washers, but i think i need to explain whats happened upto now, the window was adjusted but the doorcard was left off as i intended to soundproof it, the screw were all replaced (with washers) but the door card was stored else where, from this point the window would go around half way down and start to scratch, some months later i decided it was worth popping the card back on and seeing if i could sort out the scratch, so i backed off the now snapped screw and replaced the door card, which then wouldnt open more than an inch, but as you pointed out i forgot the washers (possibley because i was panicing that id just ruined my door). so im going to remove the door card and try again see if the window still stops, maybe if im lucky the scrathcing will stop too, and im going to butcher my door to remove that screw..... im terrified.

thankyou all for the advice, no doubt i'll be back soon even more paniced.
