Results of the head pressure test came back the other day and although the head is good

AAARGGHHH!!!!!!!

First day with the car back properly so I decide to drive her to work and back and check everything is now OK. Half way home and the turbo blows .

I've just spent 3 hours waiting and now have finally got home on the back of a tow truck. Suffice it to say that I will be on the phone to Turbo Developments tomorrow asking for a repair/replacement under warrenty!!! I've only done about 1500 miles since it was fitted and the oil & filter have been changed twice in that time, once when I fitted it and once when the head gasket was changed.

On the bright side it looks like everything remained intact so nothing seems to have been sucked into the engine.

I am still not a happy bunny at this point!!

As for the head gasket question, what I meant was that the gasket went but I had the head pressure tested as a precaution as well. As it turns out the head itself was alright (as in not cracked or anything) unlike the gasket. There was however some pressure leakage around the valves which I had reseated whilst the head was off.

Oh, and I dont think the car is a dud its actually bloody excellent. It has just had the misfortune to have been bought by calamity G, either that or I am just cursed!!

Ah, see what you mean about the head now !, seems your having a bit of bad luck at the minute, but i'm sure you will get it sorted in the end, & at least you've got a one off.

Turbo still not done although Turbo Developments have been pleasent enough about it untill this point. The current prognosis is that the core is absolutely wrecked.

One thing they have been doing however which I cannot blame them for is trying to find the reason why the turbo has failed so fast except from there point of view they want to pin this on the car. So far I have had questions asking about the Oil Pressure (0.4 - 0.5 bar warm idle as far as I can tell), Overboost (Mountain chip so boost protection would cause fuel cut-off) and blocked oil feed (pre-flushed through myself and it was fine, flushed through by the garage when they did the head and it was also fine).

I get the feeling they are trying every question that could void the warranty (which I cant blame them for) just in case and they are currently saying that a massive oil starvation would most likely cause the damage, I haven't spoken to them about this yet as I only picked there voicemail up this evening after they phoned whilst I was driving home.

Suffice to say I want a replacement turbo without further cost!!

Edit: Another comment made by them was that IHI turbo parts could be hard to acquire and the guy that knew most about them would be back next week.

Sounds to me as though you did everything you were supposed to do G, like you said, they are probably looking for way out, although obviously they need to try & discover why it has gone to avoid the same happening again, i'm sure this will end with good result !.

I think you're a factor of 10 out there, G.... Should be 4-5 bar

0.5 bar (< 8 psi) would hardly register on the OPG

I think the Ripster is much nearer the mark at 4-5 bar (62 - 78 psi) so I hope Turbo Dev. don't pick up on the mistake

But, then again, maybe you have had low oil pressure ??

That's probably true; they've had my turbo for 3 months now (waiting for parts)

I seem to remember you telling me you always left your car at idle for 30 secs or so after each run to let the turbo cool

Sorry, the oil pressure was a typo. It should indeed have read 4-5bar

Well, things have taken a turn for the worse today as they have now refused to do anything about it by blaming the car so I may be without a turbo for quite a while as this drags out.

They are now saying the thrust bearing has disintigrated and this could only be caused by not enough oil or overboost, whilst completly refusing to believe that it could be the bearing itself or even the fitting!! I have answered every question and checked and double checked everything that they have come up with regarding how the car could have caused it to fail but their only response is "well it has to be loss of oil pressure or overboost".

When I pushed them about it they got a bit sharp and pointed out my warrenty is void as they fitted the bigger compressor, when I then mentioned statutory rights they started once again saying the warrenty was void and how it is impossible to check the oil pressure to the turbo without a "special adaptor" that fits the oil feed pipe! How the hell is that the only way when the oil feed comes directly from the main oil gallery where the pressure is measured and then passes through a standard pipe with no blockages!?!

Oh and to add insult to injury I was informed that if it had been repairable they would have just repaired it with a note to check the oil feed but as it will need replacing they are not going to do anything

I am currently writing a letter of complaint to them about this now, if anybody wants to proof read it let me know.

Give them a final (and amicable) option of replacing it/sorting it out before threatening to take them to court via the "Small Claims" procedure. It's a lengthy procedure but sometimes they will pull their finger out if they think you will go through with it.
