Uprated Paddel Clutch

Postby SWLC » Wed 27.01.2010, 22:25

Hello,

I have been thinking about getting some uprated Paddel Clutch kits made and wanted to know if anyone would be interested in them. I had some ones made for the Lotus Elise and they have had some really good reviews.

Just thought I would ask the questions and see what people think?

Let me know your thoughts

Hi James,
I need to change my clutch soon but have not heard good things about paddle clutches on the M100.
Too heavy and fierce.
How was the elise one you had done?
How much will it be?

I have an uprated paddle (pucks or clutch plate not paddle shift) type clutch fitted bought through a group buy on here longer ago than seems possible. I think it's by Clutch Specialities, it was certainly imported from the US. Others have had them fitted and some have subsequently removed them as they have found them too harsh for road use. I personally don't have a problem although it is definitely quite a bit harsher than the standard clutch but is by no means an on/off switch and remains relatively progressive. I stalled embarrassingly a few times since it was fitted and whilst I was getting used to it. I fitted it as part of a series of progressive upgrades to cope with the power I intend to have one day and did the clutch, lightweight flywheel and Quaife ATB diff all at the same time.

Well, the Elise ones I have had made have gone really well as they are designed to be like a fast road use clutch so not to heavy but can take alot more hoursepower than a standard one.

I am going to speak to my guy tomorrow morning to talk about specs and also costs.

I should know everything by lunchtime so I can post it up here.

or there are these link do not see why the wheel needs re-inventing.

For road use do not get one with out shunt springs, and the higher the clamp load the harder it will be to depress the clutch pedal.

Be good to beable to buy uprated clutch in this country as i will need one in the future when i do the Turbo upgrade.

Tony,

Have a word with David JT, he has the full face clutch which i believe is suppose to similar to stock feel and last longer than a puck clutch. Dico has the 6 puck clutch fitted and i drove his downs south last week to Simons factory and you soon get use to the clutch.

On Bob`s link (just make sure it`s a sprung clutch and it`s for a Turbo)

If they are available from the US I do not see a problem.

I have asked them the question with regards which ones fit out cars and will await their reply I'm thinking
this one
product-stage-3-09.jpg

or this
product-stage-1-09.jpg

which seem to be for
Geo/Storm (1992-1993)
Isuzu/Impulse (1991-1993)
Isuzu/Stylus (1991-1993)

The amount of power a clutch can take is down to the friction material and the clamp load so when I get a reply I will ask how much power the clutches can take.

bobbrown wrote:If they are available from the US I do not see a problem.

1. is price
2. cost of shipping
3. Import duty

The clutch your looking for is the Impulse (RS) 1.6 turbo

I have spoken to a local firm about clutch and lightened flywheel.

How much does fidanza flywheel cost?

Here is their response

Subject: Re: Lotus Elan work

Hi Tony,

I do indeed remember you comming in and talking about this with you.

As mentioned previous, the work involved in fitting your suspension, larger turbo, pipework and quaife will not be a problem. That will just be subject to an hourly labour rate.

I've spoken to numerous Motorsport dealers regarding your clutch and flywheel. A lot of them do not want/do anything to help us out, however one that I deal with has went that extra mile!

We can product an new paddle clutch and lightweight flywheel for you Elan. As you can appreciate, There'll be a little R&D involved in completing such a project.

If you could be as good as to supply an original fly wheel(new or used) The Motorsport company I deal with will produce a brand new polished/Light weight item from its measurements. So you'll receive the new flywheel and your original back. This process will take 3-4 weeks.

Flywheel #400.00 Inc VAT

Similar with the Clutch. They had an Organic Item available however they are dead cert that it will not handle upto 300BHP never mind 350BHP. So their thoughts through experience it to create a paddle clutch from the dimensions they have for the organic. This process will take the same length of time as the Flywheel would take 3-4 weeks. At present, I am waiting for the quote back for the Clutch as they couldn't advise the best materials for the job untill they looked into it further. As soon as I have further details, I'll let you know them and the price.

We had an interesting conversation regarding what combination of clutch and fly would be the best for the power and if I'm to be honest, what ever the outcome is with the paddle clutch, this will be the cheapest by far without having to pay well over a thousand pound for a custom set up. They advise that if the paddle clutch is not to your liking or your spec, the only way for you to then go is to take the car to a custom transmission expert and have a duel plate and flywheel set up fabricated. As you can imagine, the R&D time for such a set up will be extremely high and thats not even covering the costs of the product's themselves.

I hope this information helps, and like I said earlier, I'll update you regarding the clutch set up and its price as soon as I know something.

Regards

Right I have finaly got some more information and a picture. They dont look the prittiest but have never let me down in any of the Lotus Elise's I have had them made for.

I am still working on the price but need to get my supplyer down a bit.

I would expect them to be about £200-£250 including the bearing! but cant be 100% sure yet.

Fwiw, the clutch has been faultless for the past four years and is still going strong. Not that much mileage, but three long cross-channel trips and half a dozen track days so far. Fine for normal road use, including heavy traffic.
Bought from HorsepowerFreaks.com - with a target of 200bhp in mind (+ standard flywheel) I opted for the Stage 2 version, SPEC SI102 (Isuzu Impulse 1.6L '90-91). Expensive, but I wanted something I could fit and forget. One of my better decisions. :D
Check their website for latest prices + shipping charges, and expect to get hit with VAT on delivery.

Thats a good price, but i would go for the full face type or the 6 puck.

I may even sell my spare new lotus stock clutch to buy one :-D

Clutch Specialties Uprated Paddle Clutch

Postby tigerdog » Wed 03.02.2010, 20:03

James,
Over the years, several board members have installed uprated clutches from Clutch Specialties in Placentia, CA. I have had zero issues with mine since I bought the car two 1/2 years ago and it had been installed at least 3 years before that. If you're looking for a supplier, they may be a good bet. The pedal is quite heavy but the clutch has never slipped even though the engine has a Garrett turbo, 550cc injectors and currently boosts to about 16PSI. See "The Green Monster" thread under Projects (major).

I looked for Clutch Specialities on the internet.

Unfortunately they do not supply an email address.

So I can't ask about Clutch and Flywheel.

Cheers

Tony, Clutch Specialties is practically local to me (<100 miles away). I can call them easily enough. What do you need to know? Send me a PM...
