RayD wrote:You’re right Bob, I wasn’t expecting they did – it was the only thing I could think off that would account the motion ratio affecting the spring rate differently from old to new. I’m sorry about that.

The motion ratio only has to be taken into account when looking at wheel to spring loads the ratio does not change
RayD wrote:I made this point earlier, it’s hardly worth bothering making a miniscule adjustment to the spring rate to account for the effort in turning the wishbone if the rate is going to randomly increased later.

As with all these things it is a compromise unless you want to get special springs made which just bumps the price up, better to select the nearest off the shelf part.

Here is a range of springs rates that could be fitted to the front

typical spring rates.jpg

This is by no means that accurate as none of the other factors has been taken into account like spring pre load or the dynamics of the whole but it does give an idea of the range that is possible but I would be inclined to use the centre half a dozen so from 263.8 lb/in (closest 250 lb/in), softer than standard to 591 lb/in (closest 600 lb/in) the latter being a race setup and may require a visit to the dentist if used on the road.
It follows the rear should be similar but the rates will be typically just a tad over half the front and should go up in relation to front as it would not be a good idea to put the same springs on the rear as the front.

I had a reply from Lotus with regard to the spring rates … unfortunately it was only to explain the “company policy not to divulge spring rates on Lotus Cars”

I can't believe this suspension development is still faffing about...................

And now it's over a grand+

Pity the KW lead wasn't looked at, and now you''re looking at Nitron!

It must be coming up for 2 years soon ?

Actually just over 1 year now. And, interspersed were the brake, wishbone and Elise steering wheel adaptor projects. And that's just what I know of and doesn't include anything else Bob's gotta do in his life since these are free time projects.

Not sure what you're trying to say with your Nitron comment. Are you saying they aren't worth looking at or just suggesting that a change in supplier is a bad idea? Or that somehow KW is better? None of the above I hope. :smt096

And a KW kit was going to work out a lower cost option? I think not as the Elise offering is £1,235.79 and the mounts are a lot easier.
At the end of the day you pay for what you get if your happy with low cost twin tube dampers carry on.

I'm still working with KW for a solution for the Elan...

i'm from 2 steps to the order off the special made KW variante III with 4HLS system for my Elan.

With the HLS system ((Hydraulic Lift System) I can go lower ... and rise the car with a push on a button for 45mm

At what sort of price?
I have a feeling it is going to be 3000 euro's plus which put it out of almost all peoples pockets.

BTW: Watch the front wheel to wheel arch liner clearances as there is not much room to play with and it is important to maintain a clearance on full bump.

Either that or the Elan you drove the other week (with the carbon rear panel :smt023) was being supported by Jedi force

Looks like business. Now put on your wetsuit and scuba mask and start scrubbing that undercarriage like Nitroman!

~1800 (suspension based on the variante III)

(I know the HLS is an expensive option, but I think i'll take it :))

Is the 1800 euro's?
Even if it is it is still amost half as much again as the Nitron setup and you could always add the HLS to that.

I was quite impressed with Nitron's setup & knowledge when I was there having the prototype fitted.

Xiphi: is the development only for the Var III?

I am hoping to have this done and dusted by then or at least as far as the group buy is concerned but it will still be available but at a higher cost.
