Could you tell me a little more about this car please? I know quite a bit about Elans as I've been looking for the right one for a while now. You state it is Firecracker Red Matalic, was this a special paint colour or a respray? Lotus have confirmed they never painted any in a colour with this name.

You've also said it has ABS and traction control, I presume these features were added as after-market fixtures and not by the factory? Is the installation to a high standard? Also mentioned is an "award Winning" "eco" engine, is this not the standard Issuzu engine usually fitted to Elans? If it's not, which awards did it win, there's no mention of this in any Lotus literature or marque books on this model to my knowledge?

Would it be possible to see any photo's of the interior and under the bonnet? You are some distance from me, I just need a little clarification before I travel to view the car.

Popular internet auction site eBay has been forced to reinforce its guidelines for advertising cars following a recent string of complaints about inappropriate and incorrect listings.

As a reflection of this new crackdown, earlier this week a handful of eBay car sellers received sternly worded warnings from the auction site’s administrators. One such seller was Jackson Lisbo of Squirrelscock. “I was shocked when I got the warning about the ad for my MX5,” Mr Lisbo said. “They told me the text in my ad was too well written, that it contained no massive chunks of pointless block capitals, and that none of the writing was inexplicably in red. They told me to re-read the guidelines, take some new photos of the car making sure that this time they were out of focus, and then re-list the car. I was shocked”.

eBay sources say the company has been forced to launch this crackdown in response to a small band of sellers who still believe the best way to sell a car is to give some actual information about it. “We’re getting tired of these idiots who want to tell you things like mileage, service history, equipment levels and so on,” said one eBay insider. “Until these people learn that the correct way to sell a car on our site is to write ‘BRILENT CAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! FASTER THNA A FEISTA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!’ in red Comic Sans and accompany it with one blurry picture of the front three quarter taken at night on a mobile phone, then we have no option but to get tough with them”.

Intresting history .. Seller says it was shipped to Lotus factory at Hethel for a complete restoration in 2004 ..
I have contacted the seller and asked him for more details and to list what work was done in the restoration...

Psychologically, you should set a low start price, and, if necessary, a higher reserve. That will at least get people interested and bidding.

It's not a great time to be selling, though, and eBay may not be the best avenue for selling 'better' cars.

My advice would be to put an ad on here. You can be really comprehensive, include lots of photos, and can reach people who are looking for Elans specifically.

On eBay, H546HPM in Herts (93k miles) failed to attract a bid with a start price of £5,250. J109TPF (63k) has one bid of £4,500, having got to £3,500 (not meeting reserve) on 1 May, and having got to £4,500 (again failing to meet reserve) on 8 May.

I'd suggest that you're unlikely to make back what you've spent on the car, or even to get back what you paid for it before all the work and improvements. That's just the way the market is, at the moment.

I can see where he said he paid 2K (a bargain I would say), in one of his first posts. Depending what he's spent since he should be able to break even I would have thought.

Lets not get into a price debate here, although I'm happy enough for the question to be asked "what should I put it on e bay for" I'd suggest a low start with a reserve for the minimum you will accept. After that it's up to someone wanting it and willing to pay what you want.

I still can't see where it says that he paid £2k for the car, but he will certainly make that back (£2k for an Elan with that mileage is a billy bargain), and then some, though probably not the total of purchase price plus the cost of work done.

Since Nige doesn't object to answering the question, I'd set the start price at 0.99p, and set the reserve at the minimum price you're prepared to see the car sell for. If it were me, I'd set it at £4k and hope that bids went higher.
