I can see and fear the tempting fate element of posting this, but I've never yet been insured for a track day despite doing loads over 20 odd years. There's obviously a deal of luck involved with that strategy being successful as well as a general lack of bottle which means I'm not as close to the limit as some other drivers. However, my general experience with the insurance industry has been very poor and so I've found that being insured no longer gives me the "peace of mind" that they play on to sell their business. If you look at premium costs - in my case for cars, buildings, contents, smallholder, alarm monitoring, travel, accident, health ; and historically for gas boiler/plumbing, mortgage and life protection - then you quickly find out that it adds up to a few £1000's/annum. My claims record over 40 years covers 4 burglaries (different addresses), a couple of no fault car/bike accidents, a CH pump failure, and some physiotherapy. The payout has inevitably been a fraction of the premiums - that must be the case for most of us cos that's how it all works. But what really gets my goat is that every time I have needed to claim I've been dealt with as if I'm trying to perpetrate some heinous fraud and the companies involved have used every tactic going to delay, reduce or refute payout. 3 of the 4 burglaries were dealt with by a loss adjuster and we finally settled on a lower sum than had been nicked despite new for old and all the other so called extras paid for. The forth time was a single item with a recent invoice and photo so I only lost my excess on that one. When I was knocked off my bike by a bloke pulling out of his driveway without looking, the other guy's insurers claimed it was my fault and my insurers refused to defend it. I paid for a defense myself and won so I got the money back and protected my accident record, but no thanks to the insurers. My Mum and Sister have both had subsidence on their houses which was covered by their building insurers with £1000 excess. Getting the problems sorted has been a 10 year battle for my sister (no longer insurable) and 4 years for my Mum - rectification work not yet agreed or authorised.
So now I never look to how to insure, I think very carefully about if it would be cheaper to pay for the odd issue myself and save the premiums instead. Always the case with any new domestic appliances bought. Part of that is how bad would it actually be to suffer the loss. Always sad, sometime very annoying, but rarely life threatening. Its possible to have lots of fun without insurance, and even when it does cost, at least you just pay for what needs doing and dont have to deal with people treating you like a criminal.
Rant over....
