Window motor assembly

Postby Tyger » Tue 19.01.2010, 06:20

Hey, can someone explain to me what makes the window motor shut off?
My RH window motor stops when it's at the bottom or top position, but my LH one keeps whirring even after it's in position. The LH one also seems to slip a bit. I've just had to replace the outer wipe seal on that side.
Before I take the assembly out and look, can anyone explain to me what exactly makes the motor stop once the window is fully up or down?

As far as I can work out, the motor stalls when the window is fully up or down? The cables can't move any further, and as there's no clutch or switch it simply stalls, I think. My L/H motor would make a horrible clunk, clunk, clunk noise when the window was fully up (and sometimes befor it had got fully up), taking it apart it appeared the cogs were worn and slipping, so I replaced it with a new modified Renault item, and it now seems fine (well, alot better anyway).

Yep, I'm getting the clunk clunk. I guess I'll have to take it out and see what's going on. :(

the white spool in the middle is the one that makes the clunk clunk noise - it moves up and down. i'm going to try the washer/longer bolt option on the wiki but if anyone has any imput all is welcome

Rebuilt with an extra washer and strapped like the advice says, tested ok, rebuilt the door and the problem returns - the window is fine going down but going up you just hear the clunk clunk noise and the glass stays put. One thing I did notice when I had the motor apart is that the spool with the wire around it can stay static while the gear at the bottom of the photo turns the bottom of the spool seperately - it is divided where the dark grease line is in the picture between the wire and gear. Is this right?

I've not stripped either of mine down that far, I've just replaced the motor section on both now. You'll need a regulator unit from a Peugeot 405 1992 to 1995, front door, for the side you need to replace. It's not hard to modify, first power up the new unit and set the slider about in the middle of the rail. Then remove the cables from the white plastic slider on both the old and new units (you are going to reuse your old slider and rail). Cut off all the nipples and remove the motor and cables assemblies from the sliders. Remove the outer cable sections and place these old outers onto the new unit's cables. You'll need to improvise a bit here as the after-market units seem to differ from different suppliers, but you need the outer cable ends (the bits with the tension springs) fitting back to the old rail. I found some crimp nipples on the internet and these worked well for me, crimp one onto the shorter cable, attach to the slider, then tension the other cable, work out where it's nipple will need to be, crimp then cut off the surplus cable. Job done. I've done both sides now and neither were any major problem. Unfortunately, I can't find where I got the crimp nipples from now :-(

The other area that needs improvising is the motor mounting screws, the replacement motor will be fitted with short screws, these need to be removed and 3 longer M6 screws attached, somehow, again after-market units seem to differ from different suppliers.

My passenger window was clunking, but the driver's side seemed to lack power and wouldn't raise or lower without assistance, a bit annoying when driving and very annoying when fully down and wouldn't even start to go up

What state are the White and black (rubber) drive blocks in.

It sounds to me as though not everything is located quite right under the drum

They both look fine - there is no wear to the teeth or the screw gear. But as the unit turns it regularly hops up and down as if it was on a cam. Unwinding the drum looks the only way of seeing inside, which is inviting a world of pain and hurt trying to rebuild it. Think I will have to do the Pug 405 mod and then take it apart to satisfy my curiousity and hopefully help out another LEC user in future.

How's my luck? I have left the left hand door semi dismantled ready to fit the Pug unit when I source one, and I thought a road test is called for to clean the rear discs up after fitting Bob Browns anodised sliding pins this weekend (MOT failure last week, the pins and the special tools are excellent and I could really tell the difference - it stopped!)

On road test the right hand window went clunk and dropped to the bottom of the door - yep, the butterfly clip has broken. Now both door panels are half built and awaiting a trip to the parts department.

What if the old slider is broken ?
Any options is alternative part, could the Peugeot part be modified to fit ?
or does anyone ever made a 3D drawing of this item, so we could print it?
Already have the butterfly clips printed.
