Well, my Elan driving days are not over yet it seems.

For those I haven't spoken to, the car was declared beyond economical repair (Cat C) by the insurance company's engineer. The body shop it was taken to wouldn't even put a number on the job, mainly due to parts availability from Lotus, apparently.

Having haggled hard with the RSA insurance company valuation guy (who was very helpful and understanding, incidentally) I'm very happy to say I'll be getting her back for salvage, plus enough cash for a decent replacement.
In the end, because I got a good deal on the car in the first place and asking prices have risen in the meantime, I'm getting back almost what I spent on her, plus the car.

I'm still not sure what to do from here:
- try and repair her? Might well be possible, but then again I still don't know whether the chassis or tub reinforcements are bent.
- buy the BRG with the dead engine and do a swap?
- buy a good replacement, swap the upgrades and pass on the rest of the old car to someone else?

I'm quite tempted to pick up an Excel, then look for a replacement Elan when convertible prices come down next winter.

In any case I probably won't be out of pocket by much, and she's been saved from the Douglas Valley dungeon. :)

Thats great news Adam,

If you get the green one for a good price and everything else is good then swap the engine.

or just get a good`un and swap the upgrades, you should get a good return on stripping the damage one as it was rear end damage.

IMHO, i wouldn`t bother repairing it. Tub will need replacing and maybe the chassis, alot of work and just end up spending more money on respray etc.

It might be worth a chat with Surferphil - He's on the lookout for a damaged/blown up/knackered one for a donor - there may be enough usable parts to keep both of you happy (and knowing Phil, he might even have an elan or 2 to sell you).

Just the one now, but this one's mine! - and it will be finished eventually..... - but also temporary custodian of a project until it is finished enough for Angie to drive it

...oh, and a 2006 Freelander destined for the jungles of The Gambia - 4500 miles across roads, desert and tracks - what could possibly go wrong?

If you decide on the shagged green one in Witney and need an extra pair of hands, a lift, whatever, I'm not that far away.....

So the outcome: I put down a deposit on another SE today. Extremely tidy & well looked after, seems a nice one and at a fair price. Should be out in an Elan again once the insurance cheque clears!
Thanks for all the support guys - it's really appreciated.

It is good news to hear that you will be owning another Elan.

But it is still bad news that another one has bit the dust.

Depending on what happens to the old one, she may drive again yet. I still suspect she's likely repairable, but I've decided I'm not able to take that task on myself at the moment. It'd be a heck of a job, whole new tub rear end etc.

Adam, good to hear you're heading back to Elan driving, hope to see you at the H&C with the new car when I get back to UK. If your red car does end up being taken on as a project to be rebuilt then I could make the parts I have available, particularly if it's someone from here.
