fuel pump

Postby ratman » Wed 29.07.2009, 17:43

when I changed the fuel pump filter, I wrote down the code on the pump in order to find part cross-reference:
Bosch 6443523 2289-107.
I know only that should be 165l/h.
Who knows if the code I wrote is a complete or only a part of the part number?
Lotus Elan S2 n°538

Anybody know if the fuel pump for the impulse turbo works for us? It looks right. It's in-tank, and shows 45 Gph (a little over 170 Lph) with an 80-100 psi pressure rating (according to the closed-loop manual, 30.5-55 psi is normal system pressure for us).

Here's the one that comes up in stock at Autozone stores

Chris, see HERE for fuel pump info.
Apparently the Wallbro 255 works a treat.

Chris,

The Impulse RS pump is what I'm using and so far it has worked just fine. It's not a direct plug and play. It takes some "rigging" as the mounts are not the same. Not a big deal though.

saska, I've read that thread. I think I've read all of the fuel pump threads. I don't need to upgrade to a larger capacity pump of anything, and frankly, I don't know why anyone would. The OEM pump supplies 4 to 5 times the amount of fuel required by the engine under its maximum demand, so even if you have put on bigger injectors, etc, a bigger pump shouldn't be necessary. I also don't want anything I would have to order and wait for. I want something that I can find in stock at a local supplier. I've been without my car way too long already.

nsr250, thanks. That's the answer I was looking for. I'm sure my mechanic can handle whatever mounting issues there are.

You didn't say.

The reason I mentioned it is because it is KNOWN TO WORK

Walbro are a US firm with HQ in Tuscon AZ -- I doubt you'd have been unable to find one in any reasonable size US town.
I posted before Nsr precisely because I know how much you want the car back and couldn't know if anyone had direct experience.
Anyway, I won't bother next time.

I hope I didn't say anything to make you upset. The tone of your last sentence kinda sounds like it. If I did, sorry. It wasn't intentional. I hope you'll still bother. That's what makes this community so great. Everybody tries to help. My philosophy is you can never post too much information, too many times, and there's no such thing as a dumb question (although I'm fairly certain I'm guilty of asking a few).

Honestly, if anybody nearby had the Walbro pump, I would probably have gone for it, since as you said, it's known to work. The problem for me is that I don't live in a reasonable size US town. I live in Shit-hole Mississippi. If a place like Autozone doesn't stock it, I have to drive 2 hours to somewhere better, or order it online and wait. I hadn't been able to find any definitive mention of anybody who'd installed the Isuzu pump, so I asked. I knew the local parts stores had those on hand.

Hi, I just changed the Fuel Pump in my SE Turbo. I got a replacement from Merlin Motor Sports at Castle Combe circuit the details are:

LOTUS Elan Fuel pump. Suitable for LOTUS Elan 1.6i Dohc 16v Year : 89-99 Engine code : Isuzu X4E1.O/E pump no. : AC-6443037.Manufactured as: FSE In Tank fuel pump for LOTUS Elan 1.6i Dohc 16v - Year 89-99 Model No : ITP332

Cost = $70.06 which translated to about £56.00 quid

I notice that Merlin list two pumps for the Elan... one at £56.40 for the Elan and one at £105.52 for the S2 Turbo.
From the parts manual I see that the same pump assy is given for the NA and Turbo, so I'd assume that the £56.40 pump is fine for both... But I don't understand what the pricy "S2" pump is for?

To compare this, can anyone suggest a good place to purchase a Walbro 255 in the UK?
And for that matter, which of the Walbro 255 pumps is the correct one? Anybody got a part #?

I don't really see any reason to go for the Walbro 255 unless one or more of the following is the case:
- it's cheaper or more easily available than the OE spec part
- you plan on going way over 200bhp
- you plan on seeing really high engine temperatures for some reason

Surely pumping more fuel than necessary just wastes power? Obviously you want to maintain the flow at 4x consumption or so to avoid vapour locks, but beyond that it seems a bit of a non-upgrade really.

Cheers,

Adam

By the way, the Isuzu pump works just fine. I now have one, purchased from a local supplier, installed in my Elan with no problem at all.

Also, I would think there would be no need to upgrade the stock fuel pump if it isn't broke, because of other performance upgrades. The stock fuel pump puts out enough pressure/volume to cover 4 to 5 times the stock engine's highest possible demand. I don't think anybody is doing any performance mods that would exceed that. Just my 2 cents worth (only worth about .5 cents in todays economy).

Do any of my US Elan friends (or anywhere) know where I can obtain the whole fuel pump assembly? Mine was sent off to be rebuilt and can't seem to get it back. I can buy the pump itself no problem, but need the structure. Only have the locking ring and the rubber gasket. Had one on the way from England, but the shipping process from England has it lost it no man's land it seems. If I only had the top plastic piece, I could build something from that. My other thought was does anyone know if the whole assembly is the same as another model such as GM, Opal, Isuzu, Geo? Help please.

Thanks all,
Randy B.

Try contacting steve matthews in Virginia. A PM should do it. He has a car he's breaking and may be able to help. If he can, he definitely will.

The original pump seems to have been a DELPHI Part # FE20023. This is available on Rockauto for $114. The Merlin part is a better value. www.merlinmotorsport.co.uk/FUEL-SYSTEMS-Fuel-Injection-Pumps-LOTUS-Elan/c26_2686_2941_2944/index.html

The Isuzu pump (a Bosch 69496) is shorter than the original and this will probably mean that you will run out of gas before the tank shows empty unless you adjust the float height. I haven't decided whether to install the Isuzu pump or do something else.

The size (length) of the fuel pump has NO relationship to the float, pickup or fuel level. It is mounted in a fixed frame and the inlet of the pump is through the rubber pad at the bottom and the strainer is pushed on from the other size. If the pump is short, it won't reach the pulsator which is a bad thing.

The wiring or connection at the pump varies with each supplier so you will likely have to do some soldering. Remember to use a good quality heat shrink to cover the joint.

The fuel pump is a 3 Bar model used in a dozen GM cars, the one that comes to mind is the 1990 Buick Riviera in the same vintage. Look for a Fuel Pump EP240. The Pulse Regulator or Pulsator is Delphi # FA0001 and the little triangle that spaces the pump from the pulsator is ACDELCO 25004553. The fuel strainer at the pump is fairly small and most that come in the kits are too big. Use FS10 to search. All of these can be searched on eBay and lots of interchange number are available. Amazon is also an OK place to look, but rarely as low cost wise than some on eBay. The Rock Auto parts prices are comparable especially if you have to source each part from a different supplier as the shipping is combined (and the 5% dixcount code usually covers a lot of the shipping).

If you look at Rock Auto and 1990 Buick Riviera 3.8L, under Fuel/Air you will find most of the parts needed to replace a pump. The pump KITS include the lower mounting ring and a strainer, but the strainer might be too long and won't fit in the well in the tank.

I believe the tank sender electronics are the same as most mid '90s GM so the internal guts could be swapped from a donor.

The float is similar to that used in a gazillion Smiths units like MG and Triumph. It is a little longer but the diameter looks to be correct. Ford US also used a similar float but made of BRASS. Look into a 1979 F350. I will try to find a ford number.

The last bit if info for the fuel system is the TOOL for removing the lines from the tank unit is a FORD tool.

Now you don't have to use two screwdrivers to slip the hoses off.

This is the fuel pump/sender assembly

Same assembly with the pump and attachments removed

One thing I never figured out. Please ask someone who know to do it. Since the pictures are all pulled from the web, maybe a PDF print of the article would be better?

What do you mean by the floater? The second picture shows the float but I don't have an MG float handy to show. I will get a picture and eBay link in a minute.
