Removing Shifter

I'm having a problem getting the 4 bolts out of the tunnel, seems they were either over tighened or rusted
in place over the years. It's kind of tight to get a torch in there to heat them and there's no access from
the bottom of the car so what's left drill them out?

The reason I want to remove it is to see if I can shorten the shift's up a bit. On my old Isuzu's all that
needed to be done was to drill a new how and move the shift cable.

Also, I want to change the knob (awful thing that it is) any suggestions to fit the thread on the shifter?

Any pointers would be fantastic!

If you want to shorten the shift, I would recommend you consider Dave's short-shift kit.

Nice as Dave's kit is, it places more stress on the cables & the SE ones are known to be weak. For this reason, it is recommended that if you fit Dave's or AB's short shift, then you should also replace the cables with either AB's or those from an S2.

To do this, you will have to remove the bolts which you started this thread about in the first place.
So it's back to the original question.

Another alternative is to shorten the gear stick itself. It's hardened steel, so don't expect to hacksaw through it in 5 minutes.

As for the gear knob, you have probably already found that the original unscrews (& I seem to remember seeing a small locking grubscrew). There are loads on e-Bay distributed from Japan (which you may or may not like). They come with a selection of plastic sleeves to fit any gear stick.

Have you tried using a breaker bar and a 1/2" drive socket? If the breaker bar doesn't shift it I'd be surprised but then I'd increase the leverage with a scaffolding pole.

Use Plus gas on the bolts as well - it might help
