Lake District Motor Museum visit (Photos)

Postby inkitin » Wed 17.03.2010, 00:42

For those that don’t know, there’s a rather good motor museum at Holker Hall in the Lake District. That is, it was at Holker Hall, until it closed last year to move to new purpose built premises in Backbarrow. It’s scheduled to open in Mid May, with improved displays and more exhibits. See here for some very brief information.

I thought it would be an idea to suggest an Elan day out to visit the new museum and afterwards have a bit of a run in the Lakes. We could meet up at Forton (Lancaster) Services, on the M6, at say 9ish on the Saturday or Sunday morning and convoy up to the museum, which opens at 10:00. After a couple of hours or so in the museum we could have some lunch and then on for bit of a drive. I’ve contacted the museum and spoken to the managing director, no less. He was very keen and said they would be very happy to reserve parking spaces for us, so that we can all park up together (nice display for the museum as well!). The entrance ticket for car club members will be £5 per person. For lunch, there’s an “upmarket” café at the museum or, just a few minutes down the road, there’s this hotel/restaurant with a good reputation for their food and at reasonable prices.

The following dates, hopefully giving a chance of half decent weather, fit nicely between the museum opening and the start of the summer holiday season. The most popular date can be chosen in a few weeks’ time.

1 5th June
2 6th June
3 12th June XXXXX 7:30 PM World Cup “England v USA” definite.
4 13th June
5 19th June
6 20th June
7 26th June
8 27th June XXXXX 3:00 PM World Cup possible England (If England are Runners Up of Group C)

OK, I think I've got the message by now. :(

Looks like I'll be going on my own. It's a shame really, it would have been nice to go up with few a Elans together.

Hope you "get back in the Elan saddle" soon Nick. Just two Elans would have been good.

Perhaps it's my overpowering body odour !! :poke:

Yes, I'll take some pics.

It's OK guys. I think I picked a bad time, what with lots of events happening in June.

I'll go anyway and report back on what it's like. :-)

Eventually managed to visit the museum last Sunday. Good weather, a nice drive up and worth the effort. The museum isn't huge but they've managed to pack an awful lot in. It took us just over two hours to go around the main part and about three quarters of an hour to go around the Bluebird exhibition, in a separate building. The layout of the main museum is such that as you follow the route through, it takes you from the earliest cars and motorbikes through to today.

The children's pedal cars were really terrific, I want one !! 8)

A few photos to "whet your appetite"
