Oil Pressure

Postby Andy_J » Sun 14.03.2010, 20:51

Started to connect up some of the dials on the red SE today, When I connected up the oil pressure guage, I got no reading on it with the engine running.

Instrument cluster red oil warning light is off and looks like there is oil reaching the top of the engine? Can't find a reference to the pressure transducer in the workshop manual. Can anyone advise of the location of the transducer or any other ideas why I have no oil pressure on the pressure guage?

For what it's worth, here's one......

The transducer is hidden behind the starter though

Managed to sort my problem this morning. after reading TJi's 'It started with a stero' minor project I realised the wiring was different on his oil guage to mine. Having swaped afew cables round I now have oil pressure showing on the guage

hi, i tried to find more information about the oil pressure transducer, but there seems to be a lack of information.
can i know what other cars have a similar oil pressure transducer? and whether i can get hold of one other than SJS auto? Rockauto maybe? same as impulse?
tks

Considerring the gauges are VDO...... As are the temp sensor, boost transducer, knock sensor, fuel sender....... Only the main cluster is Delco.

I believe so as VDO seem to use a standard sensor/gauge combination (how sensible) but make sure you go for a 10 bar one to match the gauge, check the thread and make sure it will fit as it looks quite crowded behind the starter. Search e-Bay for "VDO oil pressure 10 bar"

Alternately, check out Rockauto | Isuzu | 1991 | Impulse RS | Electrical switch & relay | Oil pressure switch | STANDARD MOTOR PRODUCTS Part # PS342 With Gauge | - looks right but don't go for the ones listed with light as these are switches for the oil pressure warning light.

this is from sjs for GBP70.49

and this is from rockauto for US$45.89

there's a lot of difference in the price, and i would definitely like to get the one from rockauto,but................

care to comment?

Looks like the SJS one has the pressure transducer (for the gauge) and switch (for the warning light) in one unit so two connections. They're shown separate on the circuit diagrams but I haven't ventured into that dark grubby area before - can anyone with an engine in the conservatory confirm and preferably take a picture please?

I looked at spare S2 engine earlier today and it does have 2 connectors (screw-on nuts) like the SJ's one. Also worth noting the SJ's one has the proper Lotus part #
I'll take a photo of it next time I'm over there as that engine doesn't have starter in it so oil pressure sender is clearly visible. Wil see if I can get wire colours and any connector terminal info as well.
Think if it is a combined warning light/pressure transducer then it'll be important to wire the correct way round otherwise you may fry something (like the guage)

Thanks Tony. According to the WikiWiring, the gauge should be brown on white and the light .. should ..... be........ white on brown! :banghead:

Peckhs,
I'll attach some photos at end but this is almost certainly a VDO unit as LGM said earlier. I couldn't get a VDO part number off it as I didn't have time or want to remove it.
If you look HERE you can see that the unit has the same notch at top, 2 poles marked G and WK and is a combined pressure and low warning light switch. Nevertheless without a VDO part number I'd still suggest getting the SJs part.

The important point is that for our cars the wiring is as follows:
Terminal marked G == White / Brown stripe (Gauge)
Terminal marked WK == Brown / White stripe (Warning Light)
Image
Image
Edit: Going back to your original post which says the oil warning is off, then this suggests the transducer is working. Perhaps it might be a good idea to recheck the wiring at the gauge end to ensure you have it the right way around. Think I'd do this before forking out >£70 for the sender unit.
Below is photo of the wiring on a working gauge:

More info:

As Marie suggested, there aren't many variations of VDO sensors. They all look like something like this:
Image

There's quite a lot of information on boaty websites. All threads appear to be 1/8" x 27 NPTF. Some have low pressure switches (0.25 Bar for the 39/15) and some don't (0.8 Bar for the 39/02 & 39/03) - I would imagine 0.8 bar is OK. We need the common ground type but these are all insulated return, however the insulated return could simply be connected to the block. We do need the 10 Bar type however to amtch the gauge.

Geoff

Looks like the threads are not all 1/8 NPT as they also do a M10 version see link the 1/8 NPT is stamped 30/15 so I do not think it is that one so the chances are it is the metric one, 360-023 150psi /10 bar Metric M10 x 1 thread , I've aske them at the link above if it has a number on it like SJ's e.g. 30/9 as it is just a tad over half the price.
