MoT brake stuff - What does it mean?

Postby lotusm100elan » Sun 10.10.2010, 00:25

I was looking at an Elan, and copied down some mumbo jumbo from the MoT

Axle 1 (745 kg)
bind 21 kgf n/s, 9 kgf o/s
brake force 273 kgf n/s L 9% L 280 kgf o/s total 553 kgf

Axle 2 (420 kg)
bind 10 kgf n/s, 9 kgf o/s
brake force 66 kgf n/s S 26% S 66 kgf o/s total 132 kgf
brake force (parking) 141 kgf n/s L L 128 kgf o/s

Service pass value 50%, test value 59% pass 685 kgf
Parking pass value 16%, test value 23% pass 269 kgf

Is this good, bad, or indifferent.

They was red brakes on the front, like. Hispec.

There must be some brake guru who knows what all this means and weather it's good bad or indiffrent for an Elan with Hispec fronts and (I guess) standard back.

Please can someone educate me, like?

Axle 1 (745 kg) weight on front axle
bind 21 kgf n/s, 9 kgf o/s Amount of drag on the front wheels not only brake related but also includes transmission
brake force 273 kgf n/s L 9% L 280 kgf o/s total 553 kgf amount of force on each wheel when the brakes were applied plus the total and is dependant on a number if factors including tyres and the state of the equipment the test was carried out on to name but two

Axle 2 (420 kg) Weight on rear axle
bind 10 kgf n/s, 9 kgf o/s As above but in our case no transmission may be just a little bit of brake drag
brake force 66 kgf n/s S 26% S 66 kgf o/s total 132 kgf amount of force on each wheel when the brakes were applied plus the total this figure may seem low when you compare it to the parking brake force but that is due to the line pressure being controled by the proportioning valves.
brake force (parking) 141 kgf n/s L L 128 kgf o/s parking brake figures

Service pass value 50%, test value 59% pass 685 kgf the pass value is the same across the board and the test value is obtained by taking the two totals front and read and dividing by the weight x 100 and expressed as a percentage.
Parking pass value 16%, test value 23% pass 269 kgf Similar to the above but only using the parking brake readings e.g. 269 divided by (745+420) x 100 = 23%

Over all it looks fine hope that helps.

Wot commute I think not and if I'm going to move it's back south, going back to my roots, back to the Isle of Wight.

Thanks Robert Brown. So no shockers, like? That's good.

What sort of numbers might a stock set up get? Worse, right?

Just Looked..

And unless I'm having a brain fart, tis highly possible it's early. Those figures fall right in the middle of stock set up.

I'll have a think today....

I don't understand what you're saying, Specky. 'Early'?

But it sounds as if it's not what you'd expect for a car with Hispec breaks?

Search the forum for standard MOT brake figures and you'll see what I mean.

The results appear to be just adverage for an Elan with standard brakes, terrible for an ultra modern car.

Hispecs are better brakes than standard, so if you're looking for an Elan I'd personally be cautious.

I'd be intrested in the AP results or another set of Hispecs.

So do you have Hi Spec calipers or standard ones painted red?
It's easy to tell Hi-Spec calipers as they have Hi Spec Motorsport writen on the out board face.

These are definitely Hi Spec calipers. They're red and have Hi Spec in white on them.

Could it be that the fluid was low? I only had a quick look at the car and its paperwork.

I wouldn't suggest posting the reg no, but it's highly likely to be someone who we know, so if you could just say what colour the car was and which garage you saw it at they may well stick their head above the parapet, then you could discuss the performance before and after the upgrade direct.

It wasn't in a garage Enright and it ain't even for sale I don't think. It was an owner who I chatted to in John Lewis car park late night shopping one thursday I went over to his gaff cos he said I could drive it and go over it as much as I likes in daylight so I could sort of get used to what to look for and so I would know what I was looking at when I was looking at one that I might want to buy, he showed me how to look at the wishbones and where the VIN was and stuff gave me a load of printouts of some buyer guide thing from here and talked me through it, and let me go over his paperwork and lent me a pair of big files of articles from magazines and that.

where abouts are you......and did the messiah say anything else? will the greek inherit the earth? :)
if this car isn't yours & your not buying it...why the interest in the brake figures.....the next one you llok at will be completely different....and surely the owner knows....:)

I hope that any car I will look at will have a MOT and the same brake figures (not the same, but in the same format), and I want to know whats right and whats not right and if it can be measured in actual numbers I want to be able to interpet what the numbers mean if you see what I mean and I can't find on the board anywhere what figures would be good and what would be bad. Specially as everyone goes on about how crap the standard brakes are, like, and how its worth getting one with Hispec brakes or AP brakes or Willwood brakes, but this one had the Hispec brakes yet the figures show they ain't working as good as they should.

As to the geezer who tried to help, well at least he tried to help and didn't rip the mickey out of me for what I don't know but am trying to find out. And if he's got a problem with his brakes I'd really like to be able to tell him that, returning the favour sort of thing.

I'm near High Wycombe and that's how come I was at John Lewis car park, like.
