hows the project going? any idea of timescale?

It's been on the backburner as I've been sorting out some other issues... like my Elan not starting!

I've determined that there are no off-the-shelf clevis links that'll meet my spec, so I've got to have them specially made. I originally designed a folded sheet steel version, but all the quotes I got were too high so I've redesigned it to be easily milled from stock steel flat. This'll probably be cheaper to make even if it uses a lot more material. It's also actually a better design and saves a component in the cable fabrication, so that's good for a few pennies.

Ideally I'd use a horizontal mill but I've got a precision engineer friend with a good turret mill and some free time, so hopefully he can make them up for a good price. Failing that, another advantage of the second design is that it'd be easier for me to make them myself, not that I want to do this many!

I can make them quickly, I can make them cheaply and I can make them good, but apparently I can only do 2 of the above together, and I'd rather keep them cheap and good if possible!

Here's a thought if you were to make them of steel and you start with a piece of square bar say 8mm square you could easily mill a slot in the top and drill a hole for the pin and if you make the cable end with a suitable size hole you should be able to crimp them directly to the cable. You could also machine the square edges off to allow a better fit through the hole in the bulkhead.

bit like this but with the round bit smaller in diameter to allow it to be crimped to the cable

You have four machining operations
mill the slot
drill the hole for the pin
machine the square to a round
drill hole for cable

job done

If you want I can ask my contact with regards to getting them made if you can supply some dimensions

I had much the same idea Bob.
I've designed it to be machined from standard section, the slot milled along the whole length at once and the resulting channel then cut into links of the correct length. Should be fairly painless.

Actually I've made a bit more progress recently... but I've also just moved house and bought a load of furniture so it'll be at least next payday before I order all the bits!
Also my workshop is currently in boxes and crates, so I'll have to sort that out before I can do the parts I'm doing myself. But now the weather's getting better and the evenings lighter I'll be back on it shortly.

Is this project now dead?

I need a new cable as I'm limited to about 90% throttle with the one I have at the moment, I have hung on for the last few months but if this is a no go I'll source another.

It's not dead, but on hiatus as I've been getting my new car sorted after the old one was written off. I'm hoping to get back to it at some point... could be next weekend depending on how things go tomorrow, or could be a while
On the plus side, I spent all day today clearing out my workshop, so it'll be easier to get back to work on the projects now the summer's over and I'm not off with the team every weekend.

How much are they ?
Why are they better than stock?
Where are they coming from US or UK?

Does anyone know of any aftermarket ones, does Isuzu work, etc?
