Help needed: Retrofitting the FunBoyThree

Postby tigerdog » Sat 23.04.2011, 01:43

I've decided to remove my Autometer Phantom gauges and return to the stock Fun Boy Three (well, two. More in a moment) The voltmeter was a cinch, done and done. Oil pressure not so much. The Autometer uses a separate transducer and I believe the original is still intact. Question is, what wires go where?
The gauge has three terminals:
G
+
┴ (looks like an inverted "T")

The wiring diagram shows three wires "B" "G" and "WN" which I take for "Black" "Green" and "White/Brown" Am I correct to assume they should be connected thusly?
G --> Black
+ --> Green
┴ --> White/Brown

I've connected this way and the needle jumps to zero when the ignition is on, but the gauge does not show pressure when the engine is running :banghead: And yes, there's pressure. :roll:

The boost gauge will be replaced by a mechanical VDO unit that looks pretty similar to the originals and should be a drop in replacement for the autometer mechanical gauge. I'm going to try to remove the lens and make a new face that will will match the look of the others and allow positioning gauge so the needle is horizontal. I should also be able to get rid of an unnecessary oil line and remove the oil transducer that's mounted where the boost transducer used to be.

Smaug came with a set of three autometer gauges installed but with white-on-black faces. Most folks used white background autometers to compliment a change to white gauges in the main cluster. To me, the Autometers have just never looked "right".

I have all new VDO gauges in my car. Love 'em. Forgot which series I got. Either cockpit or vision. One of them is used in the esprits.

I love LEC. If you poke around you can find almost anything Elan-related. Seems Andy J had the same issue about a year ago and found his answer in the "it started with a stereo" thread, whence this photo comes:

In this photo, it appears the wiring is
G --> White/Brown
+ --> Green
┴ --> Black

I'll juggle things in the morning and see if I've just answered my own question. Seems Andy J had the same issue about a year ago.

Post above had the answer. I'll try to put something in the wiki...

New Boost Gauge

Postby tigerdog » Sun 24.04.2011, 17:04

Since I have a big turbo conversion and boost accordingly, the stock boost gauge wouldn't work. I made a new face for a VDO 150-121 mechanical boost/vac gauge. Here's the finished item compared with the original.

The inverted T represents ground/earth/chassis like Image or Image and I guess G is for gauge so swapping them over is correct.

:agree: Yep, that was it. I've added a bit to the wiki to save someone else the trouble.
