Is my Clutch on the way out?

Glorious day, top down, dual carriageway, foot down, overtaking a Hyundai Coupe : so far so good!

Turbo kicks in, boost shows 0.8 (old BBS upgrade), rev counter shows 5 - 6,000 RPM, I smell burning, the Hyundai Coupe driver laughs, I pretend i never really wanted to overtake!

Is this the clutch slipping and means a new clutch?

If I drive "normally" everything is OK!

If it needs a new clutch, is it straight to Lotus or are there other clutch suppliers/manufacturers that will fit?

If I'm replacing the clutch would it make sense to replace the cam belt also? (low mileage but not replaced for 3 -4 years)(car is 1991 SE)

A quick an easy trick...

Park the car up, Put the car in 5th gear and try and drive off gently. If you go nowhere and it doesn't bite it's a sign.

With a good clutch you will smell burning a bit, but it will take you up to the speed limit.

Have a quick search on the Internet for more info...

I would't bother with another cam belt change.

Don't forget Rockauto in America for Isuzu parts, much cheaper than Lotus.

Spares normally take about 5 days.

Make sure you get a clutch/ thrust/ pressure plate for a turbo, not the N/A clutch

Another version of Dave’s trick is to stop the car from moving altogether and let the clutch out slowly … the engine should instantly stall.

If you can run the engine, in gear, with the clutch engaged and the car stood, it wants a new clutch.

find the biting point then work out how much more travel the pedal has . will tell you something

Yes, I think it's the clutch!

Been on the "Rockauto" site : seems like 5 to choose from : any advice on which one to order?

Personally I would opt for the Sachs clutch as they are a good brand part of the ZF group who make gearboxes, not sure that it would fit mine as it has a smaller clutch as its a NA.
But it's your choice or you could go uprated
