Door mirror vibration

I notice yesterday that the passenger door mirror vibrates quite a lot, yet the drivers door mirror is quite solid. I don't drive the car all that much, so I couldn't really say when this started, but I suspect it wasn't always like this.

Is there anything ca do to solve this?

Is it the mirror, the housing, or the whole thing that wobbles?

The mirror could just be unclipped from it's central mount, more likely a pivot stalk has popped off and gone down the road.

The back of the mirror recptacles could be broke.

A loose mirror housing is normally one of two things, corroded springs have snapped or more likely they've pulled through the back of the black triangle mount.

And finally, a loose assembly is normally a missing bolt in the rear of the mount, people often take them out, but don't refit them back in,

My drivers mirror used to vibrate. It was because the plastic clip on the back of the glass which accepts the metal cross adjuster had broken. I fixed it as best I could (Araldite ) but it still vibrated a bit. The best solution is to find a bit of black foam rubber (thermal insulation foam) and wedge it between the mirror glass and the body of the mirror cowling. This has lasted for years, still allows electric adjustment from the drivers seat, and has completely eliminated the vibration.

I prefer this to the alternative solution of replacing the mirror glass (with plastic backing incorporating the clip) as the only mirror glass you can buy these days is convex with an engraved message that "objects in the mirror may be closer than they appear". Duhhh...

Its my impression (though hard to be exact from the driver's seat), that its just the glass vibrating, and that the main housing is secure. I'll have a look if I can either get it apart and fix, or stuff with padding.

Had the same problem with vibration because instead of this:

If you have a loose mirror glass and your son says 'what does this do Dad' while reaching for the adjustment switch try to stop him before the glass falls out! Luckily I was stopped at traffic lights and could pick up the pieces!

Ordered C100U0316F from the parts sale and it came with ordinary glass and no stupid writing. (ordered monday, paid tuesday, in Germany on friday - result. Thanks Edith)

If your motors are working and if you are lazy like me or do not fancy removing the door lining to get at the connector, remove the 4 Torx T10 screws, (marked in red) gently remove and replace the motor cover. Fit the glass on to the new pivot pin. A total of 3 minutes.

Thanks for the pictures. I daresay mine will look the same. How does the glass remove? Do you just brute-force it?

Its easy to get out, i use string and loop it behind the glass from the sides, pull the string the glass pops out easily and the little stalks remain intact. (well they did on mine, both sides)

How about a picture or pictures? Which end do you start from? how close to the center do you get? two strings, one from each end?

Most are terrified to remove the mirror because replacement glass is not so easy autside the UK.

First glass was self removing.

On the new mirror, I pushed the glass so that it was fully in at the top leaving a space at the bottom to get fingers in. Then gently eased the mirror backing off the pivots.

That's roughly how I do it,

Push the mirror into the upper outboard section, this makes space to get your fingers under the inboard edge.. And just pull it off the central spigot and it easily comes away with the pivot arms (normally at the same time).

Not much help going through the breaker's yard nearby. Most US GM cars around '89 to '92 used cable controlled mirrors.

Some cadillacs used yoke based motor driven mirrors, but the motors are quite different.

Not many Camaros and Firebirds currently around.

I will keep looking. I hope to identify a few models that use the same internal motors. Then we just perform transplant surgery.
