Dave's shortshift - now under the management of Bob Brown

Hi all,
I tried to to ihstall the kit by myself and miserably failed.
With the control box still installed on the gearbox, I was unable to loosen the shift pin nut from the cross shaft selector arm.
Do you have any tips ? It may be easier with the control box out, but need to find a new joint, right ?
How did you guys managed to remove it, except bodybuilding ?

I've done 2 and on both I removed the selector box and used a vice -- still a bugger to shift but it worked both times and didn't apply any forces into the wrong places.

It may be easier with the control box out, but need to find a new joint, right ?

You might get lucky and not break the gasket but I wouldn't bet on it. You can get a replacement gasket from SJs

I undo the pin from below with a socket and a ratch. A second person is handy for steering and keeping the flat bit of the pin in position so it won't start rotating after a few turns. From the 7 sets i installed, i had to remove the selector box from only one and the gasket did brake, but a tiny bit of RTV did the trick.Oh, don't forget to use penetrating oil and never use excessive force.

I would say that if you can't get the pin from below with the assistance of somebody, that you first order a gasket, and when it's in, you remove the selector box and do your thing

The gasket is not subject to any stress. You can always cut a replacement from a cereal packet if necessary.

You could probably just use an instant-gasket-from-a-tube.
Alternatively you could do it right with the correct gasket which is why I said what I did.

We can safely say that Hj has become the specialist of the Netherlands and Belgium in problems or improvements off the Elan transmission!

Heartfelt thanks to Dave for the original design and production. Hat's off to Bob for continuing the tradition and combining with his cable kits. If I ever need replacements or get another Elan (with subsequent divorce ) I'll come calling!

Here's my version of Dave's short shift or Bob's short shift.
Pictures are not that good as the battery was getting low on the camera but I think you’ll get the idea.

The crossgate bell crank is now made of Aluminium (6082 T6 equivalent to HE30 old money), machined from a solid with maintenance free Iglidur bushes and a hardened and tempered steel pin. I have done away with the square holes as they are a pain when fitting the stainless steel gear cables, if the short shift is fitted with standard cables I will supply a pin to take the standard cables.
The fore/aft lever now has a slot so that the amount of travel can be adjusted from a little under 30% less to 50%, this is slightly more than Dave's as his was something like 40%, of course you can set it any where in between to suit. Still with the counter weight on the end although not shown in the levers as they are waiting to get TIG welded.

I have one of Dave's original short shift kits. I've had it for 2 years now and never got round to fitting it. If anybody would like to offer me a reasonable price, (cost me £78) I think I ought to let it go. This is the one that looks like this.
