Opie Oils advice

The Castrol TAF-X 75W90 gearbox oil (listed as the only recommended oil in the S2 handbook) is listed as discontinued by Opie. How long are stocks likely to last and does anyone know if Lotus are looking into a suitable replacement?

I've checked it out in our good book... It's cheap and cheerful gearbox oil, (by our standards) I'll send you a PM with the specs and alternatives... And the worst thing... I've thrown gallons of the stuff away...

A few years ago i asked them which oil to go for since doing trackdays and they said not to go higher than 10w/50 as our engine doesn`t get to the high temps required for 10w/60, but on there website it recomends 10w/60 on there website

IMHO i wouldn`t go higher than the 10w/50

IMHO i wouldn`t go higher than the 10w/50

We had this debate and came to the conclusion that I was right and everyone else said I was wrong apart from dapink.
The debate happened on the group buy thread which was helpfully hidden inside the Castle Combe thread, so no one else could benefit from this starling yet useful discovery. So you missed it.
Less importantly, pinky pointed out that the grading for the Gear Box oil is a different system to how it used to be when it made sense, now it's gone yank so no one knows what anything means any more apart from 5w/300 = 75w-90 Stupid isn't it!?
I'm not sure if I'm more confused by the change or by the fact that someone thought it was a good idea to change.

Amazingly, this topic was debated at length in 2006, before I even joined the board. Final consensus was Redline MTL would work but Redline MT-90 is a closer match to the Lotus spec and also fits the requirements obtained from Quaife for those of us with limited slip diffs. No one seems to have mentiıned Mobil 75W-90. I've been using it for a year and some more now. No problems to report.

...works a treat. Changed out Smaug's transmission and immediately noticed a decrease in transmission/gear noise and better shifting. Not sure what was in before but love the results of the change. Also suggest this thread be renamed to "transmission oil" or something similar to avoid new threads on the same subject.
