Is there a good place to mount one in a Elan?

Not really.

For a while I had one out of a Volvo mounted in mine. I moved the switches around so the top row was only blanks, then I took them out and mounted the holder there (retractable type). My mounting wasn't very professional looking, so I took it back out after a while. When it was there it worked ok, but got in the way of the Stereo when there was a cup in it.

Some people have mounted them on the wall between the seats by removing the pocket.

I currently just use one that hangs on the door in the glass opening. I put it on the floor under the front of my seat when not in use (which is almost all of the time). If I felt the need to mount something in there, I would be trying to figure out how to put it more or less beside the shifter, toward the passenger side.

I use a roll of duct tape sitting on the passenger floor mat.

I'd like to find a way to add one in front of the passenger seat mounted
to the console. I've tried a sealed travel mug but it keeps rolling around
and the one on the door is awkward for me..

Wedged between the passenger seat and the rear bulkhead, sitting on the speaker box.
