Dave,

My car failed its MOT on incorrect spacing of letters and numbers 2 years ago which is why i mentioned it. The following is taken from http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/Pe ... /DG_181503

What could happen if you display incorrect number plates
The police can issue fixed penalty fines for illegally displayed number plates. Offenders could face a maximum fine of £1,000 and in some cases the number plate may be withdrawn.
Vehicles with illegally displayed number plates may fail the MOT test.

Use of the word "may" indicates its probably up to the local testing station. However I was advised to change the number plates again by the garage before my current MOT as they'd had problems in the past. You must have a nice testing station or a correctly spaced registration.

I've actually got neither :-D

According to the official VOSA 'book' (and English legislation - I assume it's the same north of the border, for this one), as long as the index plates are fixed to the car so as not to cause danger, and the retro-reflective plate (where required, post 1973) displays the correct BS number (145a), then the car shall not fail SO LONG AS THE INDEX NUMBER IS CLEARLY DISPLAYED.
The issue comes with some of the 'show scripts' whereby the numerals and letters cannot easily be discerned, and the spacing is such as to mis-represent the actual number to read as something else.
On mine, there is an equal spacing between the D,4 & P (it should have no space between the D & 4), but it is still clearly readable and cannot confused with anything else, so it passes an MOT.

It is, however, illegal in accordance with Road Vehicle Licensing Regulations (which also covers the angles from which the plates must be visible, size of script etc etc).

It is stupid to have laws which are inconsistant, but hey - welcome to the UK

Officially, you can write the registration number on the bonnet on green crayon and it would still be MOT legal, but it probably wouldn't go down well with the Old Bill!!!!

Just the one now, but this one's mine! - and it will be finished eventually..... - but also temporary custodian of a project until it is finished enough for Angie to drive it

Dave,

Thanks for the ammunition. I'll be using that if the subject crops up again. Whilst it wasn't the only thing my car failed on it was on the list of things they asked the garage to put right before they'd pass it. Having only been up here a short while I'm still struggling to understand what they are saying let alone feeling confident enough to have an argument with them. :D
Thanks again for taking the time to provide the chapter and verse.

Yeah well, lets get the 'more description later' (and a pic of the engine bay might be nice) before we jump to hasty decisions!

And Ronee its kinda hard to see what boxes it ticks what with it being Red and about as old as you can get!

Seriously though it looks quite nice from the photo's,low milage, an engine bay shot would have been nice, and the roof looks tired (£500 for a new one).
You need to go and have a proper look at it, as long as it has some credible service history and the price is right you could be on to a winner

i know i know, it just looks really nice in the pictures, and the interior looks ok too!

i am dubious that it is a real sale as who bids on a car that has no description? could be a cat C write off for all we know and the bodywork looks good as its fresh repair? and also the fact it has no reserve on it, i think thats a bit silly if the car is that good as lets be honest there isnt that many people looking for one, its a select market.

i just think he wants to see what its worth to be honest then will pull the auction off before the end. i could be wrong but it looks suspicious, why take time to upload pics but not write an advert?

im holding out for a price drop on the medina green S2 thats up for 7k :-D

Sorry not new, but there's firms that will make you one with your old seals,
you start with an old tired hood that you've just got water tight but can't see though the rear window,
they make you a new one which you "tweak" to make water tight again .

Kia Elan (in UK) on eBay

Postby nyssa7 » Thu 22.03.2012, 10:57

If I could have run to this, and didn't specifically need a RHD Elan (every other car I own is LHD), this might have been interesting

Interesting find. Probably not too many of these in the UK.

I wonder if it was the one from Malik motors? I recieved a pm from them this morning.

I must admit that at 10K I would not be interested in buying it. Parts for the Kia are even harder to find than the Lotus. I was hoping to see some high res pics to compare the diferences to the Lotus. If anyone goes to see it out of curiosity please take a pic of the Chassis no.

I have been trying to source Kia elan parts that may be the same as the lotus. Kia (korea) are not willing to provide any info without a chassis no and fourgreen seem to be a dead loss.
