On BBC TV, Grand Prix The Killer Years. Watched this earlier, I guess a lot of UK based people may have already seen it. A serious eye opener! I knew F1 was pretty callous in the early days and a lot of people died but I didn't realise it was so bad. The last part at Zandvoort was shocking - the marshalls had absolutely no idea what to do! :(

FREE TO AIR F1 ...

well red bull and vettel are making my decision not to bother getting sky tv next year an easy one.
whilst i can't blame red bull for it. They are doing a stunning job but the whole move to sky to watch 10 years of the vettel / "schumacher years" isnt worth the money.

I may however go and get the eurosat dish system from B&Q point it to 13OC west , tune in to RTL , ( you know that kyle guy that brundle annoys alot) and put radio 5 live on ... free to air F1 again...
Jim Clark S2 - 1/12. The one with the Yellow spoke wheels . No 613 on dash (pushed in to factory in wrong order 615 on tub)

I didn't see much of the build up, but did they say anything about Jim Clark/von Trips' accident at Monza which killed so many spectators. I was 50 years ago, almost to the day.

IIRC, they mentioned that the last time the banking was used was when Von Trip had his crash in 61.

What I saw of the build up was pretty good, especially the comparison between John Surtees & Fernando Alonso and their respective cars. That 64 Ferrari looked fantastic but must have been a serious death trap, 3 fuel tanks, one at each side of the driver! Kudos to Surtees & everyone else who had the courage to race in those days.

Race itself was pretty good. Word to Brundle & Coulthard - one overtaking manouvre does not make Vettel a superstar! Lewis got a masterclass in both defensive driving from Scummi & how to overtake Scummi from Jenson. :D Anyone who has watched Scum race before knows that rules are something that happen to other people but to be warned by Ross Brawn was a new one though. In fairness Scummi was racing for position and it would have been small minded to penalise him for it especially as JB had passed him so easily. Good driving by Bruno Senna & Paul di Resta, nice to see them both being given a chance.

A very entertaining race even if the start reminded me of some of the starts my son & I manage on the playstation.

The only problem with RTL is that you can get up to 20 mins of advertising an hour! Sometimes they will show a dual screen but the adverts always take precidence. Even with 5 live commentary you lose track of the race. For a country that is supposed to be so F1 crazy, the coverage is shocking. Its Kai by the way and he is even more irritating in German.

RAI 1 in Italy used to show the whole race without adverts (not worked there for a few years so not sure if it still is). That might be a better option together with 5 live.

I have been relying on the BBC and some software so I am looking for an alternative as well. Is F1 shown live in the US?

If anyone needs a European sat reciever to try this, let me know as they are only about 35 euros here.

That's it for a few months. thoughts:

Vettel: Best car, get out in front so no drama. 1 overtake all season, not quite my idea of a superstar! :(

Webber: Barrichello syndrome or what! Just keep taking the money & we will throw you a win eventually. :?

Alonso: Drove the balls out of a poor car - well done! :burnout:

Hamilton: Won 3 races but where was his mind for most of the season? Lost the plot totally!

Button: A revelation, drove like we all knew he could (yes, I have been a fan for a long time) Without unreliability, wheel falling off & some dubious tyre changing rules, who knows what could have been. Brilliant.

Just one final comment - Canada!!! The only race I have seen for years that is a future classic.

Couldn't agree more Cliff - you've summed it up quite well. One thing I would like to add is that, with a few exceptions, I found the whole thing quite boring. Let's hope for more thrills and spills next season

Still think the DRS is not the way to go and would rather see the cars go back to a simple rear and front wing and let the true overtakes happen :? but it did make good viewing for spectators.

Hope with the new rules the cars are more close on the track and Team Lotus :-D improve to get up in to the mid field.

So will the BBC show all the races next year?

With the notable exception of the McClaren, how ugly are this years cars? I know they are designed for a purpose but I can't remember such a hideous display.

The end of an era:

http://pitpass.com/45659-Frank-Williams ... iams-board

The team have declined a bit lately, but what a history the Williams team have. A few mistakes along the way, replacing Damon with Heinz Harold, BMW, Ralf then Heifeld (ffs!), Rosberg and German ran Toyota has led to their sad slide down the field. Seems to be a bit of a teutonic horror story here.

They are still one of only 3 teams to win over 100 races though.

For the first time since 2009, two british drivers are on the first line of the grid. Lotus's Romain Grosjean third. Looks like a good start to the season but I cant watch it live as the BBC wants to spend all its money on Eastenders and Strictly Come Dancing and I am not prepared to give all of mine to a Corrupt Australian Thieving Bastard. :(

Well done to JB, looked like he had been for an afternoon stroll after the race. The McClaren looks good & seems pretty fast.

Lewis needs to take a year off, get out of McClaren or take his head out of his a**e. Button showed repeatedly last season that the car was good but LH can't seem to accept it. His attitude on the podium sucked. He is turning into another Massa!

One of the commentators remarked that Massa looked as if he had mentally given up, pretty poor attitude for the first race. Can't see him lasting more than a few races unless he has got something on Domenicali.

Good to see Williams doing well, gutted about the last lap. Alonso & the Saubers were pretty good too.

I watched the race on RTL (too many adverts although not as bad as it used to be) with the 5 Live audio. Too much inane chatter and they didn't even mention some overtaking, maybe it will get better as the season progresses.

Out of curiosity I watched the BBC highlights - where did they get that commentator? He needs a serious dose of valium, thought he was going to wet himself when Vettel went off! The after race analysis was worth watching as always but there was something missing, almost like they are just going through the motions. How are the BBC saving money if they still send the same people to the races?

I can understand how he feels.
Hamilton dominated in practice & a was not as quick & Button throughout the race. I( think he was frustrated more then anything else.
Vettel having a massive stroke of luck passing him at the 2nd pit stop just rubbed it in.

Massa is totally different. He is significantly slower than Alonso almost all of the time.

The production costs are a lot less than the rights to broadcast them all live.
