Clutch ?

Postby kevin31157 » Sun 06.05.2012, 17:26

Hi again all,
Just been to Norwich from home 22 miles. Went to park car in reverse. Lifted clutch pedal from the floor, clutch bites almost at the bottom so thats good i`m led to believe, bottom bite is i`m told good. Then when i depress the clutch again while car is still coasting backwards, the car judders. So i have now stopped and have put it into 1st to go forwards to park, depressed clutch, fine. Then when i am going in a forward motion again and push the clutch down, the car judders again. When i change gear whilst driving on the roads at normal speeds it changes up and down fine. Its just when i put it in 1st or reverse to go fwds or bckwds it pulls ok but on the 2nd depress to go into neutral or another gear the car judders. Is it possible the clutch is on way out.
Your expertise much appreciated everyone,
Thanks , Kevin

It doesn't sound like the clutch because you would experience similar problems when changing gear on the move if you are just getting the problem in 1st gear and reverse gear it could be the gearbox? unless you have worn splines on the clutch centre plate and it just judders on pick up in a low gear, I would say this is unusual but a possibility

?Clutch adjustment?
?Engine mountings?
?Engine damper?
It doesn't sound like the clutch is on the way out, but it sounds like something needs looked at.

Maybe the synchro nut loose, I had it on my car recently, GST sorted it for me.

Have a look at this thread:

It would be worth giving Gerald at GST in Newmarket a call.

Hi again guys,
Thanks for all the advice, i`ll just have to get it checked out in my local garage i think because i know nothing about fixing clutches or gearboxes. One more point tho, i took it to work last nite and noticed that when it was cold all the gears went in smoothly whereas before this problem started,3rd gearl has always been a little crunchy but liveable with. However, now when i drive off from cold they are all ok until the car warms up and then ALL the gears catch when going up and down the gears. I have to press the clutch down to the bottom and hold it there for a second or two then the gears WILL slide in ok when going up but ALWAYS catch or crunch a little on the down gears. a problem that was only 3rd gear before.
Any other ideas on this at all ??
thanks,
Kevin.

As Cliff suggests, give GST a call. When my 5th gear nut loosened a little, I could change up with a bit of effort but not down. If yours is getting steadily worse, then this could be the case.
Gerald will possibly to ask you some relevant questions that we have not thought of...& being on the phone, he may well be able to answer them immediately.

Make sure your local garage is a Lotus specialist or you could end up with huge bills.

My car failed near Cambridge, Gerald advised me not to drive it in case I made it any worse, recovered & repaired it for a reasonable price.
