Rubber Lip under front bumper

Postby bigdanio » Mon 29.11.2010, 12:28

Ok, so I may have the name for this part completely wrong, but I'm guessing you'll all know what I mean.

The rubber that goes under the front bumper under the front of the car is about half on, half off. It isn't a problem, but it is the only thing about the car that looks scruffy, so I want to replace it.

Is this a part that is easy enough to find? If someone could provide a part number or at least the correct name for what I am looking for it would be much appreciated.

I found 2 braking Elans, but both were missing the front bumper, and hence the rubber that goes underneath it.

I remember reading on here about someone that used one from a Renault - Megane I think.

Any advice much apppreciated.

You can get them brand spanking new from the original manufacturer, Walker Rubber.

Someone more helpful and more clued in will doubtless be along providing up to date contact details, prices etc.

I believe that it's item number A4022 (2.1 metres in length), and when I ordered one, I spoke to Glenys Barker on 01603-487371.

It cost about £13.00 including VAT IIRC.
Just one more effing bucket and I'll explode!

Thanks chaps, think I will go for the one from SJ Sportscars.

Now for the novice question: these appear to just be lengths of rubber, does anyone know of a guide to fitting them?

The screws (nuts?) that currently hold it in place, do they need to be removed? Do I need to cut holes or anything in the new one?

Forgive me, but I'm a young un and haven't had to replace parts myself before.

Cheers.

the clamping plates are plastic and generally dont survive....
i did a CAD drawing of them for people to use to cut stainless steel versions from but the holes needed tweeking and I never got the feed back of what got moved where.....so I could give you a drawing but the holes may need tweeking

Even if the holes need tweaking, I'd love to have a drawing.

OK, the rubber and the plates should be held in place with self tapping screws that are screwed into spire nuts (metal clip type jobs) If I recall correctly I had to grind a couple off because there were severely rusted - you could probably use a hacksaw otherwise to saw the head off. Don't worry if you cannot replace all 17 screws - they might not all be in place anyway. Also, the plastic clamp plates might be in more than one piece if they are there at all (according to the parts manual they were optional...)

You will have to make holes in the rubber to line up with the spire nuts / screws. I used a bradawl to do that.

In my experience (and I've replaced 3 rubber spoilers) the plates aren't strictly speaking necessary if you use penny washers under the heads of the screws - the rubber won't bend so elegantly round the corners but it's barely noticable.

Hope this helps. It's a good project to 'cut your teeth' on so to speak. Good luck

My advice would be to get it direct from Walkers - if you order from SJ's it will still get delivered direct from Walkers, but with a couple of quid for the middle man.

G, I cant remember if I told you this, but it wasnt just the hole positions that needs tweaking, it was the curvature as well.
I've had another look for the final dwg file but I still cant find it anywhere  God knows what I've done with that

I bought mine from Walker Rubber and was ok!
Before fitting it I covered it with (fake) carbon fibre, like the photo.

Hello,
I sent walker rubber a little message through their website contact page on the 10th of July and haven't received any answer yet. How did you contact them?

FYI, here is what I sent:
-----------
Hello,
I would like to buy the rubber lip which is located under the front bumper of the Lotus Elan M100.
As far as I know, its part number should be A4022.
Is is still available? What is the price including shipping to France?
How would you like to be paid? (paypal?)
Thank you in advance,
Best regards,
------------

Alan, SJ's don't usually keep them - if you order from them they phone Walkers and the item is delivered direct from the factory (at a bit of a mark-up).

i ordered one this year from sj and it came 2 days later but it was rolled up with masking tape and with no lotus part number on it so you may be right but i think they may keep some in stock now and yes you will need lots of screws and fixings to fit it but its not a hard job to do. Is there a wiki where we can look up suppliers (makers) of parts to cut out the middle man if not whould it not be a good to have one. Regards alan

Go here and look for WikiLEC! Can't find the Walker Rubber details so maybe someone would enter it....... Anyone (other than the far Eastern drugs suppliers) can get Wiki access and add useful information.
