OMG!! Gearbox oil change

After my alternator packed up and I changedit I also decided to change the brakes and pads (Ferodo replacements) I also bought some gearbox oil. GOOD JOB as when I drained the box there was literally a dribble, and I mean a dribble, in the box!!

Tomorrow the box will be bathed in new oil but OMG!!

I know I have a spare box but even still - lucky or what?

There is a large amount of oil coated on thd box so if your Élan had thd same then check the oil level.

Update:

I left the car draining overnight and when I got back to the garage this morning I found that there had been less than 100 ml of oil in my gearbox - photo attached

So much for the 1.8l recommended

I just home that the lack of oil hasn't done any major damage that cannot be seen.

Time will tell but good job I've a spare gearbox

Exactly my fear as well ... I will have to do it soon. How bad was getting the oil back in

Very very easy. I used a length of pipe from my gas BBQ and a small funnel. Took about 10 minutes to fill. The speedometer cable came out easily as well and there's a whopping hole to fill. I would say jacking the car up, releasing the old oil, draining it and refilling could take 30 minutes max to include having a cuppa whilst the oil drains.

The important part, as per Wikilec, is to make sure you can get the speedometer cable out first as you don't want to drain the oil only to find you cannot put any back in! That's the only tricky bit.

James, I have the requisite funnel and long tube if you need it, along with the required long, wobbly socket extensions for the speedo cable bolt.

Top Tip:

Do NOT remove the bolt @ the speedo cable completely, but only a few turns and then swivel the metal plate away and you're off without buggering around to get the bolt back in

I am ready to change it, I have a weird thing going on with my gears... Only first gear actually but I use it a lot so I am taking it tomorrow to transmission specialist to see what ey tell me, maybe they will tell he I have been running a dry gearbox for the last 9 months.... because honestly I have no clue as to if ever it has been Changed. Wish me luck!

Well, I needed my cables adjusted and while they were there I had them change out the gear oil. It's all done now I feel way better when he did say he took out almost 2 quarts , so I am relieved I have been driving well lubed. Even more stoked now that's is the Mobil 1 full synthetic... Now I can focus on my LGM valence upgrade, whoot!

P.S. Sparkys Transmission in S.D. Is a great shop, Bob the owner charges nothing to diagnose, diagnosed the cable adjustment and changed the gear oil, $130. Transmission Experts are crooks, they told me $35 to diagnose -then when I showed up the manager walked around the car - and the price jumped to $100!!! - I left.
